Now picture this.  A group of students is huddled around a classroom table.  On the table is a blackened cookie sheet where a long bolt holds a brown piece of high density fiber board at an angle.  Forty-nine green tipped matchsticks stand in small holes specially drilled for this purpose.  A lighter flickers and one of the matches catches fire.  The flame bends upwards, igniting the next match upslope.  Soon all 49 matches are aflame.  This may not sound like a forest to you, but the Matchstick Forest helps students envision what the first paragraph described.

The Matchstick Forest teaches students how slope and the density of standing fuels affect fire spread.  Using bolts of different lengths, or none at all to create a flat forest, students can evaluate how fire behavior changes over multiple experiments.  And there’s no one too young or too old to learn from the Matchstick Forest.  Even young children can see that the fire burned more matches faster and generated more heat with a steeper slope, while older students can actually measure flame length with rulers or time the length of the burn.

Idaho Falls District BLM has been using the Matchstick Forest to teach wildland fire prevention and fire ecology for over ten years.  Recently, a group of teachers attending a workshop for continuing education credit built, burned, and examined fire effects on the Matchstick Forest.  Later that same week, elementary children attending the Explorers Club at the Idaho Falls Public Library watched as fire prevention staff lit the experimental forests.  The children answered questions about the results and demonstrated understanding of the concepts of fire behavior.

The Matchstick Forest is a component of the FireWorks! Educational Curriculum, a product of the Rocky Mountain Research Station’s Missoula Fire Lab.  Jane Kapler Smith and Nanka McMurry developed the original curriculum to teach fire ecology in ponderosa, lodgepole, and whitebark pine forests.  Several adaptations have been created since then, including BLM Idaho’s current effort to adapt the concepts to the sagebrush steppe.  The curriculum is available online, free to the public at www.firelab.org/project/fireworks-educational-program.
