Getting involved with Mages was dangerous business. Fennec had met plenty of harmless mages, and his brother Reed had always been slightly enamored with them. Maybe that was what gave Fennec more reason to be cautious. Reed clearly wished to learn magic for himself and Fennec saw how that ambition made Reed careless.
When the two brothers ran into a Fire Magling who seemed to promise Reed everything he wanted, it all seemed too good to be true. Reed was completely smitten however, and nothing Fennec said would get through to his foolhardy brother. The Fire Magi, Pur'Tra, promised to teach Reed all she knew about her magic. She would show the brothers how Fire wasn’t just an element she could control, but how it was a higher being. It hungered. It wanted. And part of being a good Fire Magi was to appease this hunger.
Apparently, part of this hunger included Pur'Tra having Reed’s kitten. Something about how the Fire would bless them both for passing the Flame onto another. It all sounded crazy to Fennec.
Despite his misgivings, Fennec couldn’t prove Pur'Tra had ill intentions. The Fire mage became more disapproving of Fennec by the day. She convinced Reed that Fennec would only make him a weaker mage with his disbelief.
After an argument, Reed told Fennec to leave him and Pur'Tra for good. Fennec couldn’t believe his own brother would abandon him, and things only seemed to be becoming more and more suspicious. Fennec wouldn’t go far. He only hoped Reed would eventually see sense.
One fateful night, Fennec smelled the Fire that Pur'Tra always lit at dusk, but this time a horrible smell came with it. The smell of burning flesh and fur.
Fennec rushed to the scene, but Pur'Tra was already gone. A scream came from the nest that Reed had shared with Pur'Tra and their kitten. It was ablaze and Fennec watched in horror as fire ate his brother alive. He jumped in to try to save him, but it was too late. Left to die with his father, Reed’s Kitten sat in the Fire and didn’t burn, merely crying over her father’s charred remains.
Everything afterwards has been a blur, but Fennec and his niece, Gosling, are getting as far away from the Fire Magi as possible.
“Let it be known that the seedlings of Fire will be stomped out. Your fire will only be as ash in the wind, taken to far reaches where it can not spread it’s ever-consuming and destructive inferno... Fire magics will be forbidden in all of our bountiful and sacred forests. Let their treacherous sparks be quenched so we all may thrive.”
Said to have deep grey/blue fur that drifted across her like smoke, blue fire in her fur and a searing orange gaze as hot as glowing coals. She was known for her tall frame, towering over everyone like a bonfire.
She was said to have kinship with fire in a way that not even her fire mage kin could understand. She is also known to be the first 'outsider' of the Followers to become a High Matriarch. In contrast to her fiery nature, she respected all life and wielded her fire and wind magic with care and control so as not to harm any living creature.
"All living beings with souls have the potential to wield magic.”
