                                                  Fire over Fire

This hexagram is composed of the trigram  ☲ Fire above and the trigram ☲ Fire below. The names by which it is known include Fire, Radiance, the Clinging, and the Net. In this instance the inverse hexagram and the trigram inversion are identical and the same as the original hexagram, namely ☲ Fire over ☲ Fire. The complementary hexagram is ☵ Water over ☵ Water.

In addition to fire in all its manifestations, the attributes and images of the trigram Fire include rapid movement; ascension; the sun, particularly the rising sun; radiance; long-tailed birds such as the peacock or the legendary phoenix; light; enlightenment; vision; the eye; rebirth; renewal; early Spring; nets and entanglement or entrapment generally; and clinging. With respect to the last mentioned attribute, clinging, consider that although the natural direction of movement of fire is upward (ascension), fire is dependent upon the fuel which gives it life and clings to it, even as it devolves into burning embers and ultimately warm ashes.
