Now Presenting (or "It's Showtime")

Today was my presentation on Stop, Drop and Roll for Life Safety Ed. We went to the day care center at school. The other presenter and I (they’re two presentations a day) had finished setting up the room, and I took off to go to the bathroom and when I came back all the kids were there. This threw me off because usually *I’m* the one waiting.

The presentation format went like this:

Preparation

1. Introduction of myself and the topic 2. Motivational story

Presentation

1. A bit more discussion about Stop, Drop and Roll 2. Showing pictures of when it would be appropriate to use stop, drop and roll 3. Sing a song about stop, drop and roll

Application

1. Demonstrate stop, drop and roll on gym mats.

Evaluation

1. The children coach me through doing stop, drop and roll on the gym mats 2. The children perform stop, drop and roll on the gym mats

Summary

1. Outro (thanks, etc.) 2. Review when stop, drop and roll would be appropriate to use 3. Review steps of stop, drop and roll

The “motivation” story I told (the thing you use to draw the kids in and get their attention. It usually has nothing to do with your topic) went really well. I was surprised because I literally came up with it last night. I’m tempted to post it, that’s how impressed with myself I am.

The transition from the “Preparation” to the “Presentation” stages was rough. I hadn’t prepared what I was going to say about the pictures, so I think that had something to do with it. I felt kind of embarrassed that I started my song with the wrong tune (I am going to post the lyrics though for sure). But after that, things went okay.

The Application/Evaluation stages went really well. A lot of them already knew what stop, drop and roll was, so it made my job easier. By the time all the kids went through, my instructor was giving me the “cut it off” motion.

The summary was good, except I forgot to review the steps of stop, drop and roll. Overall, the presentation went well.  Afterward, I did a debrief with my instructor about how things went. I told him I thought the transitions were rough, and the children got bored and antsy as a result. But I thought I did a good job wrangling them in when they did. He agreed that it could’ve used tightening up and that was due to not being practiced enough. That’s when he told me I forgot to review the steps of stop, drop and roll. But I got an 83% so I’m okay with that, especially how cobbled together it was.
