Stories of Hübenarth - The Casting of Magic
Magic in Hübenarth comes in many variations, and the ways of using them, varies quite a lot. As magic in itself isn’t always stable, knowing how a spell is cast, is also usefull if one needs to interfere with the casting, if possibly. One should be careful, magic is not to be trifled with, it is a power that, if not controlled, potentially could wipe every living being off of this plane.
Most magic needs to be concentrated, before being of any use, secondly most spells needs to be aimed. This is also why wizards and their ilk, don’t just go about shooting Fire-balls through their fingers. It is also advisable to use a wand or another object, in order to better concentrate a spell, although wands and staves can only hold a single spell, usually however, there are many uses in these tools and they help stabilizing the magic greatly. Magical artifacts can also be wielded to improve various parts of spell casting, such as duration, range, power and many other things. Some casters prefer hand-wielded magic, to control magic with your hand (and magical rings), requires the caster to be very focused.
Most types of magic can be cast at any time, given the caster have got enough Magical Stamina, which can change depending on how the single caster feels. A caster that have, for example, just been running, will have less Focus (control over magic) as well as less Magical Stamina (ability to make more spells). Some types of magic, mostly those from the Magic School of Illusion, needs to have a valid target, before you can cast your spell. Some spells needs to be aimed at a surface, while others will affect the nearby area around the caster. Finally, there’s crafted magic, mainly Enchanting and Alchemy, both using magic, but considered as crafts more than actual magic. The Dwarven Runesmiths are the best example, as Dwarves are immune to magic, this also renders them completely unable to use magic. Runesmiths are the exception. At their special forges, Runesmiths have managed to capture magic essence into certain runes, which they then forge onto weapons or armour, allowing Dwarves to perform spectacular engineering ventures. While Runesmithing is similar to Enchanting, it’s not exactly the same. Runesmithing, as much is known that certain runes have magical abilities is unique to Dwarves and it one of thei best guarded secrets. Enchanting is about forging a spell into an item, an Enchanter is thus required to know a spell (but he/she doesn’t need to master it), before an item can be enchanted with the spell. Some more complex conjurations and golem awakenings, require the caster to gather certain items in a certain shape, for the magic to work.
With the exception of Dwarves, and a few others, every race and individual, can, potentially, be able to cast magic. Magic in general is easier to cast (and often more potent) in the direct light from the Moon of Magic, Ooloun. Being born while Ooloun is full raises the magic potential within all beings, but many casters of different nature, have found their dependency of Ooloun to be a problem, as you often need to cast magic out of need, and can’t always rely on being above ground and with clear skies, when casting.
The simplest of spells, and often the most used ones, are the spells from one of the Elemental Schools of Magic. These spells focus on Fire, Water, Air or Earth. They are mostly used for directing an attack towards enemies. A spell, that technically isn’t locked to any element, but is very basic for all magic casters, is the Magic Missile. This weak and simple spell is pure magic energy, it’s probably the one spell that any new caster learns first, it usually comes naturally upon learning how to harness magic.
More complex spells, like Conjuration and the side-branch Anitechtation, requires more knowledge and more focus, but the magical achievements are much greater with more complex magic.
In most nations and areas, the use of magic is looked upon with suspicion, but only a few places have downright banned or made laws against all magic. Mostly, the magic that is frowned upon is Shadow Magic or Dark Magic, Blood Magic and of course Chaos Magic.
