The marks that Ignire gives her Firebrands are living things. She makes them from pieces of herself. They don't do much except live in their host's skin, and pick up psychic impulses. They shape and themselves based on the mindset of their hosts, and receive orders from Ignire. A Firemark can leave its host, and usually takes the form of a small, humanoid flame. The most common reason for this would be for a Marked One to send their Firemark as a messenger. Generally, they're not intelligent enough to decide to leave their hosts on their own. They become more intelligent over time. The most ancient of them are powerful, godlike beings.

Melina Salomon According to Taya: Uhh. I don't understand why a mermaid would be in a group called the Firebrands? Isn't fire the opposite of water? But I guess it works for her.
