san could be the equivalent of a pai sho grandmaster if he wanted but he’s not interested in playing competitively

tbh he’s not really a competitive person (that is all moriko) but he loves the creativity in pai sho moves which is part of what makes him such a wildcard to play

moriko gets dared to walk across burning coals barefoot without using her bending to control them

she’s doing okay until she gets distracted right at the end and ends up burning herself

san runs to get kya and the only evidence it happened is a tiny little burn scar on her leg

it’s one of the only times lin yells at them because she’s so fucking scared

you know that toddler sibling dynamic where one is quiet and the other does all the talking for them?? that’s totally san and moriko

they have to be separated in class at scoop at first because dan’s just so used to letting moriko do the talking

they’re both distraught so it gets rectified but san starts speaking up for himself more after that

Firecracker hc? Moriko is a very linear thinker whereas San is more nebulous/out of the box. It’s why Moriko picks pai sho up quicker but S

Do you think Yin feels like she has to compete with Lin?

i don’t really think so? i’m not sure she likes lin, but she doesn’t really see her as competition for mako and bolin’s affections, nor their children’s - she sees lin as a distant relative, like the other parent/grandparent. i imagine she doesn’t really think much of lin’s brusque demeanour but she quite enjoys chatting with kya

hmm what does toph think of the twins? does she ever get to meet them?

toph absolutely meets them! she shows up the day after they’re born before anyone’s even had the chance to tell her bc she’s been watching out for them. she doesn’t really have much to do with them as babies, because she’s never been much of a baby person (barring lin and su), but when they get older and develop personalities she likes to start causing havoc with them. san is not as comfortable getting into trouble as moriko but if gramma toph and moriko are getting into some shenanigans he doesn’t want to be left out.

when san gets older he likes making glass and clay sculptures with grammy lin and he always gives one to gramma toph when she visits bc she can see these artworks like she sees huan’s metqlwork sculptures. toph loves them and keeps them with the sculptures from san.

idk if specifically braille exists in the atla universe but i think some kind of tactile reading system exists, esp if toph is heading up the rcpd, and moriko absolutely makes sure that gramma toph gets a copy of the family tree that she can read

toph likes to watch over all her family from the swamp, and if the kiddos (or her adult kiddos tbh) have nightmares, she’ll reach out and try to soothe them.

Suyin / Baatar Sr and the firetwins hc?

hmmm okay. i don’t have too many bc i’m not a huge su fan but:

i think su is absolutely delighted about the fact she’s basically adopted mako, and when they have kids. before the kids are even in the picture, su and lin are trying to patch up their relationship, and mako (and later rina) are often swept up in the beifong get togethers.

she absolutely adores children and babies so she spoils them rotten when she sees them. the kids adore their auntie su. san’s quite fascinated by the architecture stuff baatar does.

Granny Chief and Gran Gran are the highlight at the kids' birthday parties

absolutely!! lin hates it - okay, she’s loved the airkids, and the fire twins, and bopal’s kids, but that’s because they’re family. other kids must stay 10 feet away from her at all times. she’s also not too fond of the parents tbh, she doesn’t know them and she doesn’t care to. lin tries to stay as far away as possible but there are kids who always ask how metalbending works and how her cables work and she might hate kids but she’s not an awful person, so she’ll round them all up (she doesn’t want to do it more than once, she’s not a show ostrichpony) and she’ll show them how it works to many oohs and aahs

kya’s not got anything as showy as that, but she absolutely adores doing water tricks for the little kids, and mundane magic tricks (bc she absolutely learnt how to do magic tricks on her travels). she’s also the best storyteller and when the kids are old enough to have sleepover parties she stays with them and tells them the best (age appropriate) tales. some elements are borrowed from her travels, some from her parents’, some from bumi’s, and some from the depths of her imagination. she never tells the same story twice and the kids are entranced.

there are usually comments like ‘whoa your grandmas are so cool’ and ‘i wish my grandparents were that cool’ for like a week after the party

so bolin and the twins:

he’s so excited to be an uncle through rina’s entire pregnancy

he keeps buying them cute little clothes and stuffies and mako’s like ‘bolin please stop we don’t have space for all of these’

i hc that apart from rina, mako and kya, they don’t know it’s twins until they’re born bc they want it to be a surprise

so when bolin finds out, he panics because he wants them to know he loves them both equally and buys another one of everything but also slightly different so they can be their own person

he absolutely gets them their own fire ferret stuffed animals

they’re not quite pride of place (the badgermoles from grammy lin have that honour) but they’re kept long after most of their other stuffies have been given away

san absolutely adores nuktuk and spends an entire summer dressing up like him

bopal’s kids are a little younger than them and they don’t remember when their eldest cousin is born but they’re definitely excited for the one after that

they’re so close with their cousins they might as well be siblings

so another thing regarding the Beifongs:

lin absolutely sees mako and bolin, and therefore the twins, as beifongs

written into her will is the blessing and wish for them to take the beifong name if they want, because they’re as close to her own flesh and blood as it gets

everyone at the station knows about the rookie and the little chief and i think when moriko joins the force they all just automatically call her beifong, which she both loves and hates

she’s got a lot to live up to, but she handles it pretty well

(also saikhan’s successor retiring and passing the reins to mako and saying sth like ‘the rcpd will always be in good hands with a beifong at the helm’ 😭)

i can kinda see san and moriko getting a little jealous that their cousins are Official Named Beifongs and lin trying to reassure them that it doesn’t matter what official documents say, because everyone knows they’re beifongs

(bolin totally takes the beifong name when they’re married i don’t make the rules)

it’s at this point she writes it into her will
