A COMMON BOND by T. M. KUTA
Construction Project Manager Carneline has a lot of her plate at the family business. The last thing she needs is romance. But Josie, the skilled superintendent, is complicating things one iced coffee at a time.
â ïž Contemporary Lesbian Romance (Author Debut!) â ïž Small Town Romance (in the queerest small town ever) â ïž Salvadoran MC/POV character â ïž Butch/Femme â ïž Colleagues To Lovers â ïž One Night Stand â ïž Cringe-y Yet Loveable Sidekick â ïž đ¶ïžđ¶ïžđ¶ïžđ¶ïž/đđđđ (spicy!)
Well y'all after many fits and starts and life chaos later, my debut lesbian romance novella A COMMON BOND is finally here! We battled 3 family deaths, covered two separate maternity leaves at work, and rewrote this puppy twice, but it is HERE!
A Common Bond is my love letter to my day job in historic reconstruction and all of it's quirks, cliques, and capricious capers. Also... y'know, being a giant raging queer in construction. ;) It is an honor to publish a Clover Hill Romance book, and I hope you fall in love with Josie, Carneline, and Clover Hill the way I did while writing them!
PRE-ORDER NOW!
Dropping November 7, 2023!
Note: While A Common Bond is Book 13 in the Clover Hill Romance, all of the novellas stand alone. They share the same setting, a.k.a Clover Hill - Population: Queer, but are otherwise able to be read alone! If you like my novella, please consider buying one (or all) of the other 12 :)
kanna HAD to have known that women weren't permitted to learn waterbending in the north when katara said she was traveling to find a master. therefore it is my personal belief that kanna sent her 14 year old granddaughter to kick pakku's ass.
Welcome Back! đđ„°
How are you? đ
Do you maybe have some kyalin hc? đ„ș
thank you, anon! I'm doing okay
here's a few HCs:
they love being able to enjoy each other's presence in silence - sitting together reading different books and sipping tea type of thing
i think they would love taking trips to middle-of-nowhere type places, where they aren't so instantly recognizable and can just exist as a couple without people gawking
and kya would be the first one to wrap her arms around lin, but lin would be the first one to quietly reach for kya's hand
Ok minor detail but ...
So I noticed in A:TLA, and itâs carried over in LoK, that Airbenders always seem to have an advantage in a fight. And at first, it felt like plot armour, particularly in A:TLA.
But when Aang fought Bumi, he lost most of that advantage. And I realised that this wasnât just plot armour. Someone had sat and worked it out: nobody has had to fight Airbenders for generations.Â
None of the other nations have had to train to face them, or practised sparring with them, or anything. Apart from Bumi, no bender in the show has ever even met an airbender before Aang comes along. And in LoK, for the most part people still havenât. We never see fights between those who have (for e.g. we never see Tenzin and Lin fight); when Korra and Tenzin use airbending, its a unique fighting style that people arenât trained to manage.
Itâs a really small detail, and it fundamentally works to give the heroes an advantage (and make up for Aangâs young age and lack of combat experience), but I love how itâs an advantage in combat for completely logical reasons.
The detail in these shows is amazing.Â
You can see the same principle in play whenever somebody fights somebody who uses a completely unfamiliar style. Combustion benders and lavabenders arenât straight up more powerful, but theyâre pretty much always something you havenât dealt with which presents unique challenges. That red lotus lady with no arms is just a perfectly ordinary waterbender, but using forms and styles nobody else has seen before. Jet routinely smacks around benders and soldiers, but loses hard to the first person he met who had actually studied diverse styles of swordplay. When Toph invents metalbending, nobody can deal with that, but seventy years later the counters are pretty well known among people who might have to fight the cops.
And itâs why Azula, a genius prodigy who has thought long and hard about how to counter every kind of magic and martial arts out there, keeps getting messed up by a kid with a boomerang.
itâs also a detail from the second ever episode
aang straight up says to the fire nation guards on zukoâs ship âyouâve probably never fought an airbender beforeâ, because he in-universe figures out that, if what everyone around him is saying is true, and airbenders have been extinct for a century (or at least have gone to ground enough to make people think that) then he is a totally unknown figure in anyoneâs calculations
this has been brought up before but itâs also one of the reasons why hama is so thrown in her fight with katara - waterbending is about energy exchange, keeping things flowing, throwing your opponentâs power back at them and we see katara and hama do this in their fight. however, when katara is faced with a powerful blast from hama, she stands her ground and blows it apart:
[image ID: a gif of katara in the puppetmaster. she is a teenage girl with dark skin and hair and blue eyes, wearing a red outfit. she turns and throws her hand out, stopping a blast of water and turning it into a huge shield. the background is a dark forest. end image ID]
why do i bring this up?
because itâs a move - and a mindset - influenced by earthbending, which hama has never faced (she went from the south pole, to prison, to the fire nation). itâs an indication not only of kataraâs skill and power, but also how sheâs learned from her travels, and from toph
Frooop looop
My music taste is a trap. I lure you in with some good shit until you're like "yeah wow I like this this is a vibe" and then BAM! Jimmy Buffett

What are your thoughts about Pema and Tenzin since you have strong feelings about relationships with age gaps and power imbalance even in fiction, was Tenzin predatory? They are portrayed as very happy but they got together when Pema was in her late teens to early 20s and Tenzin was the Avatar's son and the last or second to last airbender.
Iâve said it before and Iâll say it again but this is like a multi-step answer so bear with me:
1. I think the writers did a fucky wucky in making Pema 35 in book 1. I know why they did it, itâs so she could be pregnant again, and so the airkids could be fairly young.
2. Rohanâs birth is honestly super unnecessary to the overall plot as itâs just there for added drama in the attack on ATI and they could have easily made him a toddler to the same effect with the airkids all being a few years older than they are. That wouldnât have affected the central plot or any of their arcs much.
3. To make all of those adjusted ages make sense and not be gross, Pema should have been a decade older than she is. 5 years younger than Lin vs 15. Much less creepy. Hell, itâs not impossible to have a baby at 45, you could even leave the airkids as they are.
4. But, back in canon land, all signs point to Pema initiating the relationship. Tenzin, however, should have used the braincells his mother gifted him to realize that Pema was far too young for him at the time and put a pin in that discussion. Something like a, âHey, youâre barely an adult and still figuring yourself out, if you still feel this way in maybe five years and I am single, letâs see if something works then.â But no, this did not happen, unfortunately.
5. The only canon information we really have is that Pema became an acolyte as a teenager and Tenzin was obviously the (second to) last airbender. Itâs never stated when they met or became friends so you could go either way on them meeting when Pema was a minor (which makes Tenzin extremely creepy) or as an adult (which makes him less creepy, but still creepy).
So with all that in mind: I hate their age gap. I find it uncomfortable enough to have thought extensively on why Pema should have been older and ways to justify that extra decade in terms of the showâs plot. A weird comparison that springs to mind for canon is something like lusting so hard after your favorite celebrity and them being desperate enough to find someone who will be fully devoted to them that you end up married and happy instead of with a restraining order. Not good by any means and definitely worthy of a âwtfâ but also...not near as bad as it could have been.
There is a writer, I love every work she has written so far and I comment or leave kudos every chapter/work that she had published. Is that too much? I'm feeling like a stalker.
Odds are you are now that authorâs favourite reader and they have you specifically in mind when they write because theyâre looking forward to your reaction to it :D
At least, thatâs how it goes for me.
a-candle-for-sherlockâ:
Reblogging for @onedamnminuteadmiralâs very accurate tags.
Something Iâve found being the commenter in this situation⊠They worry when you stop too. Iâve more than once been confronted with the fact I am Known and Acknowledged when an authorâs been like âOh thank goodness, you didnât comment last chapter I thought you were sick of itâ. Iâve also had authors hyped to hear from me if Iâve returned to a fandom after disappearing for a while. Iâve had one ask if I was ok because I disappeared for a while. They know you and they love you.Â
Can confirm my wife has a favorite commenter, when they leave a new comment on something sheâs written I get âBABE BABE BABE COME HEAR I GOT A COMMMENT FROM Xâ and I hustle to hear her read it out loud to me, her eyes shining the whole time, her whole body vibrating with joy, blushing her head off and smiling from ear to ear. She reads them and rereads them and I can always tell by the look on her face. Every comment from a favorite commenter is a love letter and listen friends you are loved in return. Â
She speculates about what Favorite Commenter will think of things in the new chapter, if theyâll guess new twists coming up in the plot, if theyâll like how she works in a new character or a rarepair in the b plot of the story. She talks about her hopes that Favorite Commenter will enjoy a new story sheâs working on. She says things like âFavorite Commenter was said something about Y and itâs not actually where Iâm going, but itâs given me a new ideaâŠâ Every comment from a favorite commenter is an inspiration, and they are writing for you.
And honestly, from my experience, having a favorite commenter can keep you writing even when you donât have the emotional wherewithal to write for yourself. A lot of people advise authors to write for themselves and to heck with anyone else, but there are times you canât. For years, I didnât write for myselfâI wrote for my favorite commenter. It meant that was the only person who saw a lot of my writing. But it also meant that I didnât stop. Â
Donât ever hesitate to tell someone how much you love their writing or why.
Kissy
