Iron firedog with terminals shaped like bulls or horses, from Capel Garmon, in Conwy, Wales; 1st century B.C. or AD.
These andirons were discovered intact in a peat bog in 1852. The item is believed to have been placed there as a votive offering to the entities of the netherworld. Andirons of this sort, known as “firedogs”, were set around a house’s central hearth to keep logs conveniently placed so as to allow greater air circulation, better burning, and less smoke.
