Calum wasn’t looking at Karina the way the rest of the people in the firehouse looked at her. Probablybecause the two of them knew something no one else knew. At least, not yet.
He satat the table in the sitting area, watching a few of the guys play a game ofpoker. He had his arms crossed over his chest, leaning back in his seat withease. As a candidate, he’d thought he’d be too busy to relax, but the firemenin this house were all laid back. He really didn’t have to do much expect a fewchores every once in a while.
The backdoor opened, and Karina entered with her paramedic partner close behind. They weretalking in hushed voices as to not disturb the game, laughing every once in awhile as they grabbed a late lunch from the kitchen. Calum watched as shewalked through the kitchen. She caught her eye and gave him a small smilebefore leaving the room.
“What’sthat about?” Smith, one of the guys playing poker, nodded his head in thedirection of Karina’s retreating figure.
“Whatdo you mean?” Calum feigned innocence, not wanting to get on the topic withthese guys just yet. He sat up straighter, trying very hard to not look like hewas hiding something and failing miserably.
“Youand Rojas. I saw that look.” Smith smirked, catching on very quickly as perusual.
“Whatlook?” Calum cleared his throat, realizing too late that his voice had risen anoctave. He really needed to work on this lying thing.
Smith wasnot buying it. But it was gaining more attention, so he simply shrugged,letting it go.
Calum laughedawkwardly, trying to avoid making eye contact with any of the other firemen inthe room. He stood up, practically running out of the room and going down thehall towards the beds. Karina sat on her assigned bed, folding some laundry. Aftera quick look around, Calum noticed no one else was around.
He satdown, facing Karina, then leant forward to kiss her lips. She laughed, leaningback slightly to look at him.
“Whatwas that for?” she asked, giving him a playful, suspicious look.
Calum shookhis head. “I’m just excited. When can we tell the guys?”
“Well, Ihave my first doctor’s appointment after shift. How does tomorrow sound?”
Calum nodded,leaning forward to kiss her again. He placed a hand on her stomach, leaningdown to get a better look. “I can’t wait to meet you, little one.”
“Forfuture reference, this is really weird.”
