6. Eighteen years old: The dawn of Fireflies
Dean’s Pov
Dean opened his eyes slowly, his heart started to beat again and his blood to rush through his cold veins. He took a deep breath, and as soon as his brain started to work again, he sat up quickly, looking around with a smile spreading on his face.
She would be there, his personal miracle, in a stunning dress with her lovely smile. She would take him to the Sky room and free him.
What would he do with her ? How would he protect her ? He could take her on hunts and in motel rooms, but she was so young…
He rubbed his eyes and looked around.
“Firefly ?” he whispered, always afraid to cause her trouble.
But she wasn’t there. So he sat against the wall, ignoring the screams and the smell of burnt flesh. He was smiling, in the middle of Hell, he was just sitting there with his back against the freezing wall, and a light smile on his face.
This day, Dean didn’t start to worry until Alastair showed up again, silent but in an excellent mood. And even then, Dean thought he could endure one more session, because his Firefly would come for him…
And he did, he endured the torture like it was just another bad moment, barely flinching, focused on her radiant face and on her soothing voice. When his heart gave up again, his last beat was still filled with so much hope.
The day after, Dean woke up counting. He lost the notion of time often, maybe he just had confused the days, maybe the day she was supposed to show up was this one. So he smiled again, and then endured being ripped apart.
When the third day came, he thought something was wrong. Maybe she needed a little more time to find the key, or maybe she was busy. His smile was weaker, and the torture became truly unbearable again, but he bled without a complain again, cherishing her memory, clinging to the knowledge that she was working to their freedom. And when the pain was threatening to make him lose his mind, he just tried to imagine her face in a huge teddy bear store…
By the end of the week, his smile had faded totally. Three days was not possible, she couldn’t keep that promise, so he will have to be brave and strong. But she always ended up in his cell, with her kindness and her light. Always.
So he kept clinging to his hope. Through days, then weeks, of the most enthusiastic and inventive torture, he kept cherishing the certainty that she would come for him.
But she didn’t, and in his so often pierced and smashed skull, her face was becoming blurry. He had to think harder and harder to remember her voice…
He opened the eye he could open, his pupil focusing on Alastair. The demon was talking, he sometimes talked a lot, and his voice alone had become a torment by itself. He was cleaning his hands from all the blood they were covered in.
The rack was piercing the skin of his back, but he had no clear idea of it, in the din of pain, everything was confused and sharp at the same time.
That’s when she appeared, in her cute white dress, her headless teddy bear pressed against her heart. He smiled at her pretty appearance, he wanted to take her little girl form in his arms, but they were tied up.
“Firefly…” he murmured.
“Firefly ?” Alastair’s rasping voice repeated, making her vanish. “You’re talking about your little friend, right ?”
He didn’t answer, panting slightly through extreme pain, just hoping she would appear again, maybe for real this time.
“She won’t come, Dean” the demon smiled.
“She will… and she will… kick your ass…” Dean struggled to say in an exhale.
“Dean Dean Dean…” Alastair chuckled darkly. “Do you really think a little girl could do anything to me ? Do you really think we would have allowed a little girl to walk Hell freely ? Huh ?”
Dean tried to swallow his saliva, but it was only blood.
“Do you think” the demon continued. “We would let a child visit you here ? Dean, my dear Dean, you have to understand the girl doesn’t exist.”
The air went suddenly colder, and the smell of blood thicker.
“No” Dean closed his valid eye to think of her.
She was real, she was hope and light, she had to be, the demon was saying that to make him suffer, but he had to admit, it was working. Each one of the monster’s words was worse than any of his knives.
“You have to admit she was convincing” Alastair smiled.”With dresses from another time and her stupid plans. Wait, did you really believe in it ? That there was some key that could take you out of here ?”
Dean felt his chest tighten.
She had to be real… But he had always questioned a child in Hell, a beautiful and innocent child. Her powers… Everything was blurry, and the more he was trying to remember her, the more things got mixed and confusing.
“She exists” he stated like he could.
Why would they have created such an illusion ? That made no sense…
“If she’s real, tell me her name” his torturer shrugged. “Her story, where are her parents, anything” he put the blade down for a second. “You can’t right ? You never asked yourself how she could grow up ?”
Dean stayed silent, the very air was hurting now, his soul was screaming at him and the whole universe seemed to disappear.
If, only if, she wasn’t real, then it meant torture was for eternity. It meant he would never see Sam again, and just stay on that rack until he forgot everything about life.
“Now you told us everything, we don’t need to use that anymore. The mirage is gone. Now where were we ?” the demon smiled wide, taking another knife.
At this instant, Dean Winchester’s heart collapsed, along with his world and any hope he could have.
His mind kept fighting for a few moments, trying desperately to find any proof that his Firefly wasn’t totally made up. But he remembered thinking she wasn’t real so often, and the time wasn’t clear at all. Was it days ? Years ? Centuries ? Did she grow up or was she sometimes young and other moments adult, according to what he needed the most at the time ?
What was her name… In years, she had to have said it at least once…
But the more he tried, drowning in pain like he was in the middle of an angry sea, the more her memory became baffling, the more she seemed far away… So, suffocating and exhausted, Dean stopped struggling against the waves of despair drowning him.
And when Alastair’s blade reached his lungs, Dean’s will shattered, along with his soul.

Reader’s Pov
The chains were so heavy. Lilith let them be changed everyday, to be sure, but Y/n didn’t fight it anymore, she didn’t even try…
She had let Dean down. She promised him, and then she left him, forsaked him…
From her cage that was located next to the Queen’s throne room, she could hear Lilith talk.
“I’m so tired of her already, she never listens, always being stubborn. We need Lucifer, now.” Lilith told Crowley.
“It’s not like we can just call him, Lilith, we need the seals to be broken first.” Crowley sounded annoyed, his eyes kept flicking briefly to Y/n.
“I’ll take care of that, everything to get this piece of filth out of here, I don’t care what he does to her, even if it’s just to kill her” Lilith stated.
She stood up from her throne and walked closer to Crowley, each of her steps threatening, her head high on her proud neck. She grabbed his black tie and tugged a little at it.
“I have business to attend to. I expect you to make sure everything stays in order, yes ?”
“Yes” Crowley nodded, earning an authoritative look from his Queen. “Your majesty” he finished his sentence.
She let go of his tie with a push as she made her way out of the throne room. Crowley turned on his heels for a few minutes, sighing and muttering things for himself.
Curled up in her cage, her eyes closed, Y/n barely paid attention to him. She was engrossed in her self hate with passion. Demons only brought pain and sorrow, it was their nature, and she was half that darkness, how could she think that she could bring anything good to Dean ?
“You there” her father pointed at the guard demon of her cage. “Go check on my hounds, I need them ready for their next trip Upstairs.”
The demon nodded and made his way out of the room. She opened her eyes and stared in the void in front of her. From the corner of her eye, she could see Crowley look around before he hurried to her cage, pulling out the keys to unlock the door.
“Promise me that you won’t blast me away when I take those chains off” he said as he opened the door.
Her eyes moved laboriously on him, despair had made her every move heavy and difficult. But when she saw the guilty look in his usually so hard eyes, a little energy filled her again. Maybe, just maybe there would be one last hope.
She nodded as Crowley took off all her chains.
“We don’t have much time, child” he whispered, pulling her up from the ground and motionning her to follow him.
“Much time for what ?” she asked, her voice was hoarse from not using it for so long, not eating or drinking either.
“Getting you out of here” he said once they were in the hall.
She stopped in her tracks, getting out of here. Lilith’s chambers or Hell ? Her eyes were trembling with a mix of emotions.
He noticed she had stopped and walked back to grasp her arm harsly, tugging her along. But she refused to move, her feet planted on the cold floor, her eyes searching his face.
“What do you mean, Crowley ?” she asked.
“Shhh” he hushed her, looking around. “Be quiet ! We have to hurry” he tugged on her arm once again but she stayed still once again.
With a deep sigh he pulled her into a smaller corridor to hide them from possible demon eyes.
“I’m taking you out of Hell” he stated.
“What ? Why ?” she shook her head in disbelief, was it another trick ?
Why would Crowley want her out ? He trained her all her life to one day rule Hell, he punished her for even thinking about something else then Hell and now he is taking her out ?
“I… Does that matter ? Now hurry or you’ll be stuck in that cage until Lucifer arrives” he left the corridor and hurriedly went to her room.
She frowned when she started to understand. He had wanted her to be perfect for the Devil, but now she had rebelled, even with her useful powers, Lucifer would certainly just kill her.
“Take anything you need, you won’t be coming back” he stated as he looked outside the doors.
“But I don’t understa-” Y/n began.
“Y/n! We don’t have time for questions will you for once just do as you’re told !” he yelled in a hushed tone.
She looked around the room and there was nothing she wanted to take with her. This room held nothing but hatred and contempt. But, of course, there was something she wanted to take with her.
“I won’t leave without Dean” she stated, her arms crossed over her chest.
A deep sigh left Crowley’s mouth.
“I knew you were gonna ask that…” he muttered.
“I promised I would get him out, I’m not going without Dean” she stood her ground. “lock me again if you intend to let him rot.”
“Y/n, we don’t have time for this discussion.” Crowley seethed. “He’s just a human ! They won’t kill my offspring for a human.”
“I’m not moving an inch without Dean, Crowley” Y/n sat down on her bed.
She saw her father’s features soften and his shoulders fall in defeat ; and a smile grew on her face. The child she once was appeared in her eyes, as she got on her feet.
“Let’s get him, father ! Now !” she jumped on her feet, trying to keep her voice calm even with her heart racing. “I know the way.”
“No” he cut her. “I will get him. Pack a few things, and I will go give some orders. Don’t leave this room !” he said as he sneaked out of the room.
She nodded and started looking around.
There was nothing she really wanted but she would have given anything for what was happening. And now Crowley had understood they could be on the same side, everything would be different.
She took her watch and that book she loved. It was a tourist guide to California with pictures and maps, there was even advice on where to drink and what to eat. She held it to her heart, slow-dancing with it for just a second, imagining the sun on her skin already. Not once she thought of taking clothes or jewelry, not even the diamonds and pearls.
“Are you ready ?” the demon cut her, rolling his eyes at her visible happiness.
“Where is Dean ?” she asked, her little worn out book pressed to her.
“Jael is taking him out as we speak, hurry.”
She started running and Crowley was now the one that struggled to follow.
“Where are you going ?” Crowley tried to catch her. “This way.”
She just needed to see it with her own eyes, to pass Dean’s cell and to see it empty.
And it was. No trace of blood, no chains and no trace of the man she loved. He must be out already, feeling the sun maybe, or maybe it was night… She smiled and ran back to Crowley to join the path he was taking.
They went through a door that had never been there before and something new hit her eyes and face. A light darkness that had nothing to do with Hell. She closed them for a second and when she opened them again, her pupils dilated.
They were standing on a crossroad like Crowley had often talked about.
Earth.
Earth !
“Run !” Crowley told her, as he tried to close the crystal door behind him.
“Where is Dean ?” she looked around but demons started pushing the door on the other side.
“Run, Y/n, he’s waiting this way !” Crowley pointed at a fied. “If they get you, you won’t see him again !”
Y/n turned to the place her father had pointed and started to run like she had never run. The wind was hitting her skin and her messy, dirty hair was flying without her powers. She could feel freedom hitting her heart like it was beating her inside with vibrations. The temperature was new, simply nice and nothing was made to hurt. She pushed on her legs and started running even faster, her lungs filling with air for the first time.
She felt like flying.
On her right, a hellhound appeared, running on her side, his smoke furr dancing in the night. She smiled, looking at the wolf-like giant wolf struggling to catch up to escort her.
“DEAN” she screamed in the night. “DEAAAN.”
His name felt like flying too.
“DEEEAN !”
But in the middle of the field, under a tree, only her father was standing, his hands in the pockets of his black suit.
Something was wrong.
She stopped, not even needing a minute to catch her breath. The hellhound joined the others behind Crowley and her smile faded.
“What’s happening ?” she frowned. “Where is he ?”
“I’m afraid Mister Winchester couldn’t join us” the demon just said.
“Wh- what ?” her breathing got stuck in her lungs. “We have to get him…”
“Forget Dean Winchester” her father said calmly. “Getting you out of Hell will bring more trouble than you can imagine to me, I’m not stealing their pet too !”
“I told you I wouldn’t follow if he wasn’t coming !” she started to panic.
Crowley rolled his eyes, and the hellhounds started growling at the rage vibrating under her skin, still weakened by Lilith’s spell.
“That’s why I told you he was coming” the demon stated. “Come with me now, I have to hide you.”
He reached to her but she flinched.
“You can NEVER be trusted !” she yelled, tears filling her eyes. “GO GET DEAN !” But her father just stayed stern while she was yelling at him. “GO GET DEAN NOW !”
“I DON’T HAVE THE POWER TO DO THAT !” her father finally yelled. “I gave you freedom ! Isn’t it what you always wanted ! Come now Y/n, I know a place where you can hide.”
“NO !” she screamed so loud that the plants in the field bent like there had been a shock, and the hounds took a step back. “NO ! NO !”
Her affirmation was powerful and sure, just like her feet when she started running again to escape her father and Hell for good.
This time, her vision was blurred with tears and lungs crushed with sobs, but the barks of the hounds got further and further as she was outrunning them.
Dean’s Pov
His vision was also blurred, his lungs also crushed…
His world had collapsed when he had admitted there was certainly no such thing as fireflies in the darkness of Hell. There will never be light.
“S-stop” he whimpered. “Please…”
His hand grasped Alastair’s wrist, making the thousand needles in him move. A tear fell on his bloody face.
“I won’t stop until you accept the deal, Dean” Alastair smiled sadistically. “Did you think of it again ?”
“Yes…” Dean said weakly.
His affirmation wasn’t powerful at all, and it certainly was not sure… But it was his answer.
“Yes…” he sobbed. “Yes…”
Reader’s POV
The sun was rising on the horizon. A beautiful pink and orange dawn, like she had dreamed of her whole life.
But she wasn’t looking at it, she had barely noticed it, crushed by her devastating pain. She couldn’t even enjoy what was heaven for her…
She was standing on a little hill, bathed in sun, watching the city down in the valley. Its lights were still on in its streets and buildings because the night was still laying on it.
It looked like a thousand fireflies.
After a deep breath, she took the heavy fabric of her dress in one hand, wiped her tears with the other, and started to walk toward this world she knew so few about, without the man that was supposed to walk by her side.
