(sorry to answer right away lol) yeah i totally get what you're saying. it took me two years to finish the book just cuz it took so long to get through the first half of it. but i like the second and third books much more, the second one especially. there's more female characters and there's much less time dedicated to world building which was nice because.... there was a lot of world building in the first one...
Yeah it was the guy’s first book, he was in his early 20s when he wrote it I think. So I’m sure he learned from his mistakes. The worldbuilding was...a problem lol. He was trying to do China Miéville amounts of worldbuilding with My First Published Novel skills and it really did not work, I def got bored and skipped chunks of description/exposition
you weren't a fan of the lies of locke lamora? no hard feelings, just curious on your opinion. I haven't seen a lot of other people who have read it so yeah i'm curious
Oh geez, it’s been a while, but let’s see…main character with zero flaws of any substance, 200 pages of witty banter before the plot begins followed by 150 pages of shit I actually managed to get invested in that is brought to a screeching halt by a 30-page Fun Scoundrel Adventure to (again, some more) show off the main character’s Coolness, a total of two (I think) female characters who are both background at best and only one survives beyond the first half of the book, writing style not strong enough to support the level of detail…
I did hear some of this was fixed in later books, at least.

honestly i prefer that cuz a lot of the time if you're reading inquistor/companion ships it's cuz you ship that companion with YOUR inqusitor so yeah. good shit.
