Day 16: Steve/ Captain America quotes!
There is a reason to love him
Captain America Review
I went longer in my review than I typically do on Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/user/id/815772801/), so I figured I would post it here.
The kind of film you either love or hate, Captain America: The First Avenger is unapologetically for the fans. Chris Evan's un-ironic portrayal of Captain America as the selfless hero he is in the comics, along with clever dialog and an excellent supporting cast, makes it one of the few well done superhero movies I've seen.
One thing to quip about, however. Hugo Weaving needed to stick with the accent the whole time, or not do it at all. Though he did a good job at conveying Red Skull's character, sometimes his line reading sticks out. The best example, is his pronunciation of "schedule," which anyone who saw the film will remember.
Though I deeply enjoyed the film, it is not one for people who are interested in ambiguity, and depth, to their lead characters. Captain America is pure good, and Red Skull is pure evil. If you aren't able to accept that, you will not be able to get into the film. That's including the fact that there are many well-executed action scenes. The apparent flatness to the lead characters, would make the action scenes come off as uninspiring.
Though this "flatness" may put off some, I reveled in that aspect of the film. It didn't go the path of "darkening" the hero, which many superhero films have done in the past few years. Though this sometimes works (ex. The Dark Knight), there are more instances of it not working (ex. Spiderman 3). For that matter, I'm also glad they didn't make Red Skull an ambiguous antagonist; though I enjoy movies that do that, it wouldn't be proper for Red Skull. He is a head Nazi, after all.
In short, I would recommend this film to any fan of comics or science fiction, but would be cautious of people unfamiliar with Captain America.
