Second, Newtonian laws of inertia presuppose the principle of motion, since it declares that at a fundamental level, the capacity to change spatial movement must be realized by an external force; in other words, the potency to change must be realized by an actual.

(3) Well, what of gravity, then? Do bodies interacting gravitationally not move on their own? As with the previous answers, the answer is no. For gravitation, as an attractive force, requires multiple bodies. Again, this presupposes the principle of motion, since the potency for one body to move gravitationally is realized by the other body. In fact, the very capacity for one body to move to any other point in space is the actualization of a potential, and thus still mandates an actual.

(4) Lastly, and this is the biggest misunderstanding of St. Thomas's argument, many scientists look to the Big Bang as the ultimate explanation of reality. But, as I stated in my previous post, the First Way argues from simultaneous motion, not linear motion. While I still believe the Universe to ultimately imply a Creator (these are different cosmological arguments), the First Way does not infer God's existence from the primary act of Creation, but rather from the sustaining act of Creation. That is, the First Way argues from a First Mover in the simultaneous sense rather than the linear sense. As such, the Big Bang is completely irrelevant to St. Thomas's argument, and I am sure he would "facepalm" at such popular misunderstandings of his argument today.

Of course, there are more serious philosophical rebuttals to the argument than these (all of them resolvable) but I find that current scientific thinkers tend towards these rather poor objections. As always, St. Thomas Aquinas triumphs!
