The first sleepover

There were lots of reasons why my first night out in 13 months might not go to plan; friends not getting on (some of whom had recently broken up), taxi not turning up to take us home, getting hopelessly drunk as my liver is so out of practice it has probably entirely regenerated itself since its last big escapade and has no real muscle memory for metabolising copious quantities of vodka...

These were all trivial fears, however, compared to the horror, which was the teeny one's first full night away from home. She has spent a lot of time with Granny and Grandad, both in their house and elsewhere. Big sister was also going to be there. She's taken everything else, EVER, in her stride and without fuss. There was absolutely no tangible cause for concern. And yet the fear was there. What if she hated it? What if I hated it? What if the grandparents hated it?!

Equally, what if on my first night of drinking I turn into a quivering, gibbering wreck as all the emotion I've been carefully concealing for the last 4 months comes gushing out. Not negative emotion you understand, no no. I had real concerns I was going to be phoning the mother-in-law at 1 o'clock in the morning weeping 'I love her so much...I need to hear her breathing!'

As it turned out, there was nothing to worry about. No in-fighting, no ridiculous drunken antics, the taxi was there as planned, darling daughters I and II were both immaculately well behaved, no mushy maternal outpourings from me... Just a good night out.

I may even be tempted to go on another one.

In 13 months or so...
