Homework #1: Collaborate
The starting point for this artwork is the least successful of the 6 small works projects done by a classmate which we exchanged in class last week.
For this homework assignment, take ownership of this artwork and complete it in your voice. Successful collaborative works will be transformed into something you that fits into your own art practice from something completely other to it. Be open to the experience of allowing someone else and their ideas, materials, decision making, and process to effect your own.
Post images of the artwork before and after the collaboration. Take some time to reflect on what you have learned about yourself as an artist through this collaboration and write about the project and your experience on your blog.
Please use the hashtag #homework1 to make your post easy to identify. This post is due posted to your blog and graded as part of blog check #2.
Video above:
A video of artwork by Swiss artist collaborative duo Fischi & Weiss called “The Way Things Go”.
Fischli and Weiss remove these things that surround us from their contexts in our daily lives, and then restructure their relationships to one another. The artists aim neither to glorify nor to alienate these common objects, but merely to create new references in which they might be considered.
“The Way Things Go” simply records the self-destructing performance of Fischli's and Weiss' most ambitious construction: 100 feet of physical interactions, chemical reactions, and precisely crafted chaos.
