Sunday morning started at a relaxed pace. The heat was still strong, much like the day before. We began the day at Biluota Park in Hebei, where a sea view spot made for good photos. Looking down into the water, we saw plenty of jellyfish. The most striking one, which I had to photograph, was a Barrel Jellyfish about 50-60 cm wide. Watching him slowly swim against the gentle waves was surprisingly calming; but in the end, I had to retreat to the shade, defeated by the intense sun. I was also intrigued by the fishing spot where Deng Xiaoping once fished. The entrance fee was 20 yuan. The sea was not ideal for swimming, but there were many nice photo spots.
For lunch, we went to a restaurant not far from the beach to try fish dumplings, one of Hebei’s specialties. The flavors were interesting, though perhaps I’m still more used to the tastes I know well. My favorite from the meal turned out to be the cold chicken dish (口水鸡, Kou Shui Ji) served in a savory-sweet sauce with beautifully red chili oil that wasn’t spicy. The restaurant also had a kids’ menu, though I personally felt the prices were not particularly kid-friendly.
