@fishaband - Kodaline + Diane Birch - Subterranean - Chicago IL
Arriving before Kodaline took the stage, we were introduced to Diane Birch for the first time. She exclaimed, “Let’s play some tunes”. Not wasting a minute, she thumped piano keys prompting bandmates to follow. Birch projected a thick and elegant wave of soft 70’s-like pop melodies that washed over fans. Birch and bandmates drew in all early arriving Kodaline fans. While Birch played we met road manager for Kodaline, Lewis. He entertained us enthusiastically telling us a tale of a break-down they recently had with the generator (alternator) on their van, leaving them only minutes to spare before last night's performance.
Birch, Michigan native, just released Speak a Little Louder (October 15th, 2013), here sophomore effort. Tracks on the record to checkout are “Speak a Little Louder”, “Love and War” and “All The Love You Got”. Originally noticed by Prince, at L’Orangerie in the Beverly Hotel (2006), invited her to his home for a group of writing sessions, of which Birch composed the majority of the material for her debut release, Bible Belt (May 19, 2009).
Kodaline, Dublin-based Irish alternative folk-rock foursome, are touring for their debut release, “In A Perfect World” (June 14, 2013). "High Hopes", one of three singles off the record, peaked at Number 1 on the Irish Singles Charts. Kodaline, touring like mad, are now reaching for chart-toppers in the states. The material weighs heavier on the alternative side, however the tune “Love Like This” and select others on the record include harmonica and mandolin performed by frontman Steve Garrigan. This gives balance to the record adding a stitch of folk to their prominently alternative sound.
Vocal harmonies among the four bandmates mesmerized a packed two-floor, all-ages, Subterranean crowd in Chicago, IL last night. The smaller stage delivered an intimate experience and allowed for close observation of bandmates interactions. Fans responded to the song “All Comes Down” by singing along after Garrigan pulled the mic down motioning for the audience to fill in singing for him. Towards the end of the set as the band stepped aside from all mics, carrying only one acoustic guitar, Garrigan quieted fans for an acapella performance of “Bring It On Home To Me” by the late RCA artist Sam Cooke. Other tunes to checkout off the record are, “Love Like This”, “High Hopes, and “Brand New Day”.
We had the pleasure of being introduced to Garrigan and bandmates post show performance and encouraged them to keep working hard, because it’s definitely paying off.
