Writer director Werner Herzog in Peru filming Fitzcarraldo (1982) and Klaus Kinski as Brian Fitzgerald which the natives mispronounce as Fitzcarraldo.
Werner was born in Munich and has 68 director credits so far, from four shorts 1962-68, his first feature in 1968, to a 2016 documentary.
Werner has three other films on the TSPDT list of the 1,000 Greatest Films: Aguirre: The Wrath of God (97), The Enigma of Kasper Hauser (498) and the documentary Grizzly Man (557).
Grizzly Man is a good documentary, but it is insignificant next to his documentary masterpiece the Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) in southern France where humanity’s oldest artwork was discovered.
