A small bunch of freshly picked flowers hanging by his side, Fitz silently walked through the quiet graveyard. He had never liked this place, but now it was the only thing he had; it was the only place he could still be close to her. Fitz sank to his knees in front of the familiar headstone. He removed the dead flowers from the cemetery vase, replacing them with the fresh ones. He always liked it when she had a fresh bouquet of flowers. The flowers always seemed to brighten up a place. Her smile had always had that same effect; it could always brighten up a place – even a place as horrible as where he was now. God how he missed that smile. A single tear fell down his cheek as his finger traced over the name. Jemma Simmons. His voice barely above a whisper, Fitz began to talk, talk about everything. Some might find it silly, but this was what he did. This was the only thing keeping him sane. For so long he had always counted on Jemma to be there, constantly by his side, always ready to talk. He could throw ideas out, he could ask for advice, he could joke around or even just talk nonsense. She was always there to listen. Now that she was gone… Well, Fitz still found that he would talk to her. Sometimes he thought he could even hear her replies. He knew it was ridiculous. She was gone. Dead. It had been that way for three years now and that wasn’t going to change. “I’m sorry, Jem,” he said, always coming back around to the same words every time he visited her. “I failed you. I told you I would always be there for you, that we would be able to fix everything together. I should have been there to save you. I couldn’t…” His voice caught in his throat, coming back out as a strangled sob. His eyes were swollen and red as tears began to stream down his cheeks. His hand went out to touch the headstone again. “I love you.” The three little words were just a whisper, but he hoped they were loud enough that wherever she was now, she could hear them. He heard a sound from behind him, but he didn’t turn around. This was a graveyard, he was used to running into other mourners when he came to visit. No one ever spoke. People often like to be left alone when they grieved. Fitz didn’t want to turn his attention away from Jemma; this was his time with her and no one was going to take that time away from him. “I’m sorry.” The voice from behind him sent shivers through his spine. It almost sounded like… no… he was losing it. He was hearing things. It was his grief. He was just wishing he could hear her voice again. But the voice had sounded so real that Fitz couldn’t help but turn around out of habit. He never was expecting what he saw. There she was standing there. Jemma. His Jemma. He scrambled to his feet, his face still tracked with tears. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her. This was madness. This was a dream, this had to be a dream, there was no other possibility. He stood motionless, staring at the ghost. She looked so real he wanted to run up and touch her, hold her in his arms, but he couldn’t make his feet move. He was frozen in the spot. All he could do was whisper out, his voice dry and cracking, “Jemma?”
Past and Future
Fitz couldn’t believe it had worked. The number of times he had seen Daisy, Lincoln and the other Inhumans use their powers, you would think this type of thing would be old hat, but he still had not believed it. Yet here he was, standing in the middle of the courtyard at the Academy. He felt younger, his hair a little longer and his body a little more scrawny, however his mind was still exactly as it was before. He could remember every experience since leaving the Academy, his time with SHIELD and the events after SHIELD fell. Fitz had gone back in time. There really had been no reason for Fitz to travel in time, after all, he knew he eventually got the girl. But it had been after years of not wanting to tell her the truth, worried about the consequences. Even after he had finally mustered up the courage to tell her at the bottom of the ocean, it had taken forever for them to gain any traction. He had always wondered what would have happened if he had actually told Jemma Simmons how he felt back at the Academy. How different would their lives be now? A chance meeting with an Inhuman with the gift of time travel allowed him to learn the answer. One small touch and Fitz was back to where Fitzsimmons began. As he saw Jemma from across the courtyard a familiar feeling of nervousness came bubbling up. She was as beautiful as ever, yet slightly younger. Exactly how he remembered her. Their relationship had come so far, but old habits die hard. Shaking the feeling off, Fitz made his way across the courtyard, raising his hand, calling “Simmons,” as he tried to get her attention.
