Goblin Week 2022 #5 - Five for Silver
Five for Silver
To most silver symbolises second. Second place. Second best. But not on Tracy Island.
There silver was the first.
First idea.
First concept.
First design.
First built.
First response.
Her pilot is even the first-born.
She’s iconic, a sign of safety.
Maybe not as big as two of her sisters, maybe not as stealthy as another. But she’s fast, she gets to places where her sisters can’t in time that they couldn’t even dream of.
People in danger see her and they know, they’ve been heard, and their call has been answered, they’ll be safe at home soon.
“Thunderbird One on approach, we’ll have you out of there in no time.”
I can’t look at a magpie without thinking of that one rhyme lol
Bella White - Five For Silver (2024) … five of White’s favorite songs …
EP Review: Bella White - Five for Silver
Bella White’s “Luxury Liner” fades into the sonic horizon on Bakersfield-fueled electric guitar, bringing Five for Silver to a vivid, tone-painting end.
Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris would be proud.
It begins with White’s musically and pronoun-faithful rendition of Neil Young’s “Unknown Legend,” which, like all but the final cut on the five-song, all-covers EP, is acoustic and country leaning. And while White doesn’t sing “Unknown Legend” the way Young did, her fragile twang is every bit as unique among women as his wobbly quaver is among men.
She gives similar treatment to another singular voice - Lucinda Williams’ - on “Concrete and Barbed Wire,” set to a sad waltz called with violin.
White is equally successful in transforming Tweedy’s “Nobody Dies Anymore” into a whimsical, major-chord downer while making a small-town spiritual of Ted Lucas’ “I’ll Find a Way (To Carry it All).”
So while none of the cuts on Five for Silver started out as Bella White songs, they all ended up, at least in part, as Bella White songs.

Song Review: Bella White - “Concrete and Barbed Wire”
Bella White took “all-time hero” Lucinda Williams to the country and set “Concrete and Barbed Wire” to a sad waltz called with violin.
And there’s something magical that happens when a singular singer (the always-cracking-beautifully White) covers another singular singer, in this case the thick-tongued and gravelly Williams. The result is necessarily 180 degrees away from the root, but it’s nevertheless a loving homage to “one of (White’s) favorite songs off such an inspiring album.”
If Williams doesn’t love it, she needs to have to ears checked. Same goes for you, Dear Reader.
“Concrete and Barbed Wire” announces the Aug. 16 arrival of Five for Silver, an all-covers EP that’ll include White’s previously released renditions of “Unknown Legend” and “I’ll Find a Way (To Carry it All)” plus two additional tracks.

COMMISSION FOR A GIFSET OF THE VARIOUS DOCTORS THESE CORRESPOND TO
You know, like One saying goodbye to Susan, Three dressed as an old woman, Nine kissing Rose… Please? Someone who knows how to make gifs or whatever?
I tried. Some of them are kinda far-fetched, but the best I could find.
(Only last gif is mine)
