So much time had passed since that fateful event, but Vincent would still hesitate at the beginnings of his tale: An angel came to me as I was dying. But it was true; he could still point the way to the broken tree-trunk of the wreck to prove it, alongside the discarded door of the Testarossa, from when Sebastian had pried it apart to get to him all those years ago. He must have thought that Vincent was dead if not for the unsteady blinking of his brown eyes, which eventually swiveled over to his own blue ones.

“I recognize your face,” the angel had said quietly - tonelessly - though his eyes burned gentle. “and those eyes, now that they are shadeless; O one and only unfortunate head of Belorgey, you are in trouble now, aren’t you.”

Yes, Sebastian had kept his eyes uncovered then, so radiant they had been.Now one was hidden for Vincent’s sake only, but he remembered.

On their first wedding-day the skies were clear, blue glass stretched overhead as wide and deep as the sea, and although they were alone and no one was there to watch them, they danced the afternoon away. They drove to the nearest mairie in the morning, got married there, and drove back safely unwitnessed and united at last. They put out two deckchairs and set a record player by the open door of the cabin; Franck slipped out of their suit and into a light sundress they’d purchased for the occasion, while Gesaffelstein cast off his jacket and loosened his tie; with laughing smiles and deepening kisses they danced in each other’s arms, first to a summery ballad then to slow loving croons. “Just imagine,” Franck said dreamily, resting their head on their husband’s shoulder, his jewel gleaning bright upon their left hand. “two whole weeks of just us, Gesa, when we’re not practicing our dance in advance for the other wedding.”

“Oh, we’ll make it a spectacular one, all right,” Gesaffelstein laughed, “dance and wedding both; everyone will see at last that you’re mine.”

🤝 - First Meeting / Schneider/Till

You dislike him at first glance, but what makes this different to your many other dislikes in life is that you feel this way not for any lack but delightful excess. Sure, he came here for his voice, which he hasn’t shown it yet - something you immediately latch onto as a complaint, just because it’s there - but he also came under duress, anyone (even you) would be shy and reluctant to perform under these conditions. No, it’s something about the way he moves, the serenity about him that doesn’t match his form, the way he humbles your presence simply by being there. It’s pure luck that he does find his exceptionally fine voice after a convenient bottle of Korn nearby; one verse is all it takes to shift your dislike and clarify it into three things you’ve never felt simultaneously towards a man before: a sense of stunned admiration, a wash of relief that he is not there to threaten your position as drummer, and intense shame towards yourself for always managing to assume the worst from the same container. Nothing about Till changed, your own attitude did; what’s that meant to be?

“Well,” you’re the first one to speak out; he turns to face you, green eyes mildly startled, and your heart leaps just beneath your throat. “... that’s that, I think.”

Gaspard hates it, how smug and well-dressed Xavier is every time they meet, once every month or a couple if business is laid low; whatever might be said of Mike Gesaffelstein’s depravity or lack thereof, he dresses his employees so well that it blindsides him every time. When Gaspard thinks of all the laughing boyhood summers he spent with Xavier - he wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d never saw him again, the essence of puppy love is that one always drifts apart - he becomes doubly stunned at how their diverged lives have crossed over again: same-ranked, but inherently different, and therefore mistrusting. Products are exchanged, greetings from Sebastian Božović communicated - there’s nothing more to do here, so Gaspard turns away from Xavier’s impeccable form, only to hear: “Ey, Gasha?”

Xavier smirks, and reaches out to straighten his tie, not that it’s a good one in the first place. “You take care of yourself out there.”

Gaspard hates it, he really does - but oh, he hates the warmth of anticipation in his heart more.

The time Bob sent them pictures of a fishing trip he’d taken some years ago was the first time Franck thought that he’d make a good husband - if not for someone else already in the works, for their own sake, for sure. They’d have died of embarrassment before they ever mentioned it to Bob, but it was true, and it was entirely their preferences kicking into gear. He seemed to fish for recreation rather than for food, most of the pictures were him waiting; the rod cast in water, a leisurely cigarette in his mouth, his face lightly stubbled from a day or so of camping outdoors. One picture was of Bob perched next to a camping stove, reading with one hand and stirring a pot of stew with the other, clean white bowls set out for two. Franck sighed over those pictures, admiring him, even before they thought of who might have taken those pictures with him back then - and when they did think about it, they wished more than ever that it could have been them instead.
