Around the World Dinner (Australia). Cafe Forty-Two. Little Rock, Arkansas. 9.21.2017.
This five-course meal showcased foods traditionally popular in Australia.
Chiko Roll–Chicken broth-braised cabbage, barley, and ground lamb in egg roll pastry with mango chutney and curly scallion. This was a meaty egg-roll, and it was my favorite course.
Sydney Salted Squid–Lightly battered, wok-fried calimari, cucumber and “rocket” arugula salad, lemon myrtle aioli, sweet chili tomato sauce. This was good, but it was pretty much just like every other fried calimari dish I’ve had.
Wagyu Walkabout–Ground Australian wagyu, pickled beetroot, grilled pineapple, caramelized onions, sambal mayo, Forty-Two ketchup on house bakery brioche. I honestly don’t remember this dish and I forgot to take a photo of it, but I remember it being my third favorite of the night. In fact, I ranked them in the order that they came, 1st course to 5th.
Bundaberg Barra–Wattleseed and macadamia crusted barramundi, green pea and water chestnut salad, dijon, orange marmalade. This tasted like catfish to me, which I have never really liked because it kind of tastes like dirt.
Chocolate Pavlovas–Hazelnut cream topped with salted caramel sauce. That cream wasworth it, but the giant macaroon thing was not.
Currently ranked 7th of 17 September meals.
Around the World Dinner (Scotland). Cafe Forty-Two. Little Rock, Arkansas. 3.16.2017.
This five-course meal showcased foods traditionally popular in Scotland.
Scotch Egg–House-made lamb sausage wrapped around a boiled egg, crusted in herbed bread crumbs and fried to a golden brown. Finished with smashed sweet potatoes and 42 pickles. I could eat those pickles all day, but I wish the egg was soft-boiled.
Cullen Skink–A hearty chowder of smoked haddock, velvety leeks, and potatoes topped with garlic chive oil. This was by far the best dish of the night. Smokey and rich. I’d order this off the menu in a heartbeat.
“Haggis,” Tatties and Pickled Neeps–An homage to the original made with ground pork, Scottish oats, coriander, mace, and nutmeg served with butter smashed potatoes and pickled turnips. The texture of the oats didn’t work for me, but otherwise, this dish was meatloaf and potatoes.
Birdie Meat Pie–A ground venison filled buttery flaky pastry seasoned with fresh thyme, ground mustard, and cracked pepper, alongside veal demi-glace, fried potatoes, and caramelized onions. I felt like I was eating poutine. Nothing special about this carb-heavy dish.
Raspberry & Scotch Cheesecake–With chocolate citrus mousse, raspberry curd, and Scotch whiskey anglaise. All of this melted in my mouth.
Currently ranked 3rd of eight March meals.
