At the local garden centre, Perrywoods, Essex, there are cheerful murals by a local artist in the cafe. The houseplants can be found for sale in the glasshouses including Stromanthe ‘Triostar’ (calathea) with the foliage marked with cream, green purple and pink variegation and complimented by a purple/pink underside. There was also Anthurium ‘Hot Lips’ (flamingo flower), a tropical American plant grown for its brightly coloured flowering spathes.

Happy in the shade Jacobinia or Brazilian plume flower (justicia carnea or jacobinia carnea), also flamingo flower, is a flowering plant native to the Atlantic forests of eastern Brazil. Although it’s tropical it likes a moist shaded spot. I’ve never deliberately grown it, just transplanted it occasionally. Pretty flowers but needs to be cut back or it gets spindly and messy. You can strike it from cuttings. Beautiful Christmas colour from the Flamingo Flower or Anthurium (Anthurium Andreanum) a member of the arum family. Common names also include tailflower and laceleaf. It’s from northern Mexico to northern Argentina and parts of the Caribbean. It honestly looks too good to be true. Just like a fake plastic plant. It likes shade and should not be overwatered.
