nooot really sure genderq*eer is a word you should be using. some people might use that word to identify themselves, but it makes some people uncomfortable.

It’s just that….several people who identify that way have not only said it’s okay but asked me to use that term.  They say it’s a term they’ve reclaimed and that it makes them angry when people state that the term is still a slur.  They say that to say q*eer is a bad word is to erase the history of reclaimed agency and struggle behind it, for older people who are LGBT.  This has been the overwhelming majority of my experience.  It is also regularly a term used in academic discourse about gender, sex, and sexual orientation (it’s called Q*eer Theory and Q*eer Studies, for your reference).  

However if you are trans or nonbinary and  it makes you uncomfortable, since I am cis, I will refrain from using the term in the future.  I know that no terminology speaks for everyone within any group.   

Please know that I was given the impression that it was the preferred and respectful term and that I’m very sorry. Offense was unintentional and I will bear this in mind in the future.
