Lyrics from MXM’s I’m the One
In the middle of too many moments and connections / We were lost, you and I / We’ve missed each other’s paths for too long / No more, let’s not hesitate anymore
All your life you’ve been told stories about what it’s like to meet your soulmate and how it changes your world, but you’ve always been doubtful that it really is so impactful. At least you were, until you saw your first flash of color. You’d thought you knew what colors were, until that moment. In the one instant, everything became brighter and so much more; more vibrant, more alive, more beautiful. And then it was gone.
You whirled around looking for someone to stand out. Had your soulmate just passed by? That was the first thought that came to mind, but on the busy street, with so many people and cars passing by it was impossible to pick anyone out. Besides, how could you tell? You had been told that meeting your soulmate is what made everything more colorful, but no one had ever said what to do if you just pass by them.
When weeks went by with everything looking the same you started to wonder if you had just imagined that flash. But just when you were putting away the last of your hope, it happened again. This time you were on a bus, on your way home after a long day. As you stared out the window another bus passed by going the opposite direction and your world exploded in color. You gasped, trying to study the faces on the passing bus, but it was already gone, the colors leaving with it.
Slumping down you sighed. The flashes of color were so beautiful; you wanted more, you wanted to see in those vibrant colors all the time. And along with this, you felt a tugging in your heart, a longing for your soulmate. You knew they were out there, so close and yet so far from you.
Over the course of the next few weeks, you kept seeing flashes of color, always so beautiful, and always so short lived, making those moments almost as full as pain as they were of beauty. But no matter how often they occurred, you never seemed to catch even a glimpse of your soulmate.
There was always something preventing you from finding them. Like the times before you seemed to be in a crowd of people or in a vehicle most of the times you were hit with the flashes. There was always something preventing you from finding them. Over time, the flashes began to hurt more, and your searching became more desperate. Seeing just these small flashes, and never the person causing them hurt you more than you would have thought possible.
The next flashes happened one after the other, several months after the first time you had seen color, and they hurt more than any before them. Waiting for a train a man had rushed by you, moving at a pace that was almost a run. As he crossed your field of vision another flash overwhelmed you. Standing there stunned, it took you too long to process the situation. By the time you started running after him it was already too late.
As you got to the edge of the platform the train was already pulling away. It picked up speed, leaving you staring at it in despair, only to be struck with another flash of color when one of the train cars passed in front of you. He was right there, and yet so unreachable. If only you had reacted sooner maybe you could have caught up to him.
Your eyes teared up as your thoughts started to spiral into despair. What if you never saw him again? What if you just kept seeing the flashes, but never met him? You might have forever lost your chance to be with your soulmate. Would it have been better if you had never passed him by? Would it have been better to never have seen those beautiful colors that flashed for a moment before disappearing? A hollowness grew in your chest, so afraid to have lost him forever.
After those two flashes that left you so hopeless, weeks went by with no more color. In fact, it seemed that the little color you had been able to see around you had faded, leaving everything in shades of gray. The grayness of the world overwhelmed you, sapping away all of your emotions.
You tried to find ways to cheer yourself up, but all the relief was temporary, the lack of color a constant reminder of what you might never see again. You walked home, having spent the day trying to distract yourself to no avail. Sighing heavily you looked around you. People were happily walking by, enjoying the day in a way you weren’t sure you would ever be able to again.
Leaning against a post you felt tired. More and more you had been wishing to have never passed by him. No color was better than those short flashes that hurt you so much. Knowing that he had been so close was so much worse, so much more unbearable, than it would have been to have never known he existed.
As you were thinking this another painful flash of color engulfed your eyes. You jolted upright, the colors already gone again. He was here, and you weren’t going to lose him again. You pushed through the crowd, the desperation urging you onward, and then you saw a man who had mix of hope and despair on his face. As your eyes met his, the colors came back, more alive than ever before, so beautiful they were almost painful, but this pain was so much better than what you had experienced with the brief flashes, those always laced with a sense of loss. And this time, the colors stayed.
You rushed towards him and he ran towards you, both of you so desperate to not lose the other again. When you were almost to him, he opened his arms and you flung yourself into them. As you stood there he held you tight and whispered, “I found you.” You looked up into his eyes, and there were tears gathering at the edges of them, the relief of finding you overwhelming him.
Tears were already falling from your eyes as you smiled at him. He was so beautiful, so colorful, and he was yours. Your soulmate. He moved one of his arms from hugging you so he could wipe a tear from your cheek. “Please, don’t cry, I’m here now, you’re here now.” He moved his hand back to its place around you and he hugged you even more tightly than before. “I’m never going to lose you again,” he promised.
You stood there, wrapped in his embrace, and you were home.
