buried deep with her anxieties, allie thinks maybe the only reason she really wants to come to the gala is so that she can see madi. the reason they’re not there, getting ready with them is a lomizde thing that mila’s explained to her so nicely and she had listened intently, she had understood but now it had just … lost its stickiness, she can’t remember and it’s combed away with the rest of the confusion about why madi wasn’t with the two of them- with mila. what she does know is that it’s a family thing, and that, she understands enough not to ask any more about it.
the tenderest truth of them all is that she just misses madi, so there’s a bright bundle of happiness that she gets to see them at all, forgetting the rest of the awful bits she’s made out of nowhere. allie knows everything will be just fine, so long as they’re together. and she gets to have the lovely surprise of seeing what they’d picked out. a magnetic silver glint catches big blue eyes and allie finds them in a flurry of petals and butterfly wings.
she hugs them with an excited squeal, first, throwing her arms around their shoulders in a squeeze that pushes every bit of affection out with the embrace. when her arms loosen, she only pulls back slightly, giddy and about to start spilling from that heart of hers. but allie never makes it back down to her toes, her hands still tangled at the back of madi’s next as she notices the copper of her hair only reaching their shoulders, instead of spilling down their back. allie cards her fingers through the strands, in awe, not mourning. “ your hair … ” then, along the shining, sparkling silver cast across their shoulder. “ ooh, and you have wings. ” finally, those delicate fingers brush against the side of their face as allie beams. “ you’re, like, glowing, madi. ”
