Hey all! So, if any of you remember, back in the day we announced that Flashsticks are making Icelandic Flashsticks! While this project is on hold, they have released a sick new app with a sick thing called an object scanner; you take a picture of an object, and Flashsticks' object scanner will translate for you. This is revolutionary; neither one of us had event seen--or heard--of this before, and it's an amazing idea! (Though, to be honest, the entire Flashsticks company idea is just genius.) But this is where we come in; the object scanner can be translated into Icelandic! Our review is below the line, and if you want to check out Flashsticks' app, click here (and here for android users) :). And it’s free!
So, the object scanner is actually a really, really cool idea. Basically, you open the app and press the green “scan object” button. Then, you find something you want to translate (let’s say, a glass of a water) and you take a picture of it, press “go” (and no, the picture doesn’t save to your camera roll), and Flashstick scans it for you in a surprising amount of detail. Finally, you pick the language you want to translate it into (for the hell of it, let’s say Icelandic), press the Icelandic option (that has a cute little Icelandic flag next to it), and voila! It’s been translated! And here are some pros and cons....
Pro’s:
It’s a revolutionary idea. And while I’ve mentioned this like five times, it really is an important factor. I mean, Jeez, how cool is that?! I could take a picture of a book and learn the word for it, instantly!
It’s simple, and easy to use.
There are so many languages offered, all with such a variety! (Even languages as “small” as Icelandic!)
If you have any problems, the staff is easy to contact (and is super duper friendly!!). You can look up their email here, on the Flashsticks website.
Con’s:
The one con I have is barely even a con, but is the usual con for most online language translators:
It’s not 100000% accurate*
*in Icelandic.
But it isn’t 1000% accurate right now. Plus, it’s only just been released. I’m 1000% positive that this app will develop to become more accurate in Icelandic very soon, especially now that this post has brought light to it ;). I mean, of course there are some issues; the app’s only just been released, right? But as I’ve said before, this problem can (and will) be fixed really soon, and isn’t that major.
Overall review:
Get the app (and the translator!) I’m super serious when I say this. There are games to play to practice your Flashsticks, there’s the really cool translator, and in the end, Flashsticks is definitely the perfect company to get behind. They’re cool, and their products bring innovation to the world of online translation and language learning. I can definitely see them getting big, and when you try their stuff, you will, too!
PS. Yes, we’re working with Flashsticks, but everything I’ve said is honest and is something I would stand behind for a million years or something. They really rock.
