Selected Works from Flat Parenthood by Tan Tian (谭天). 2018.
Tan Tian is a visual artist and curator. Born in Beijing, China, he graduated from the Department of Fine Art, Kingston University, London in 2012. He currently lives and works in Beijing and New York. Tan’s oeuvre displays work that is candid and revelatory - often delving into the self-referential, or meta - the sense of which is amplified by Tan’s experimental use of colours, images and language.
In his Flat Parenthood series, Tan explores the emotional turbulence and contradictions of fatherhood. He features the aesthetic of childhood image-making heavily - each work is depicted on standard-sized paper childlike scribbles, the use of materials crayons, poster paint and coloured pencils all attesting to a deliberately haphazard process of creation that privileges the experience of the child and infantilises the artist.
