Coffee package from a generous faraway friend. Too good.
Fairly Fond of Farewell Books
Inspired by Do512's list of zines and bookstores in Austin, yesterday Josh and I set out to explore the city's wealth of literature. Knowing myself and how I like to tarry, I was aware we'd likely only knock one or two stops off the list before we had to prepare for our respective Saturday evening hootenannies, so we carefully selected Farewell Books, and eagerly stepped inside the bright and open Cesar Chavez storefront.
It was the sort of place that makes a purveyor of curious things lick their chops. A shared space, the progressive bookstore merges with an art gallery and eclectic shop, Las Cruxes, and perhaps the best Americano I've experienced since moving to Austin, at Flat Track Coffee in the back.
Unique finds at Las Cruxes
Josh was excited to find some obscure records on the Las Cruxes side, and I was beaming with visions of glitter and glue as I perused the many works of local and niche artists and writers on the Farewell side. I know I'll be making many more visits to Farewell Books to visit with my friends on the bookshelves, and to try the delicious smelling vegetarian Jewish food truck, Schmaltz we spied in the lot behind the store.
Reminiscent of my Young Blood Gallery in Atlanta, and Voo in Berlin, I believe Farewell might be the place to steal my heart in Austin.
Next up, we hope to successfully locate the secret Sherwood Forest Zine Library. There's no specific address listed for the library, so we lurked up and down Sherwood Lane, hoping for a secret password or clue to fall into our laps. Alas, it did not. Next time we'll set up an appointment and fill you in on the zine library, dear bibliophiles!
