he towers over the sink, staring into an abyss of dirty dishes and tea-stained cups that were practically begging to be rinsed. It’s his second to least favorite chore of the workday, second only to the task of speaking to customers – in other words, the entirety of his job itself. regardless, he does it out of love mixed with a strong willingness to help. it’s one of the very few traits on the list of things he likes about himself.
he sighs as he continues to size the dishes up, estimating a solid half-hour to finish the task. it’s not like he has anything better to do. truthfully, the amount of effort he puts into the task is exacerbated by his strong attention to detail. there’s something soothing about being forced to be completely present with a task, and it could potentially turn into something he enjoys if he decides to work on his patience.
the dishes won’t wash themselves, he silently reminds himself in mental preparation as he reaches for the teacup on the very top of the pile, intent on beginning the simple yet arduous task. the sound of her voice catches him off guard, almost causing him to drop the delicate piece of china in his hand. his head shoots up, momentarily startled, but his expression shifts into a calm one as he turns to face her with a shy smile. normally he would be too polite to agree to her offer, but she is an employee after all. he takes a few steps to the side, making room for her to fill in.
❝ i don’t really need help, but sure. i can wash the first half and you can put them to dry for me. we can switch for the rest – unless you have a better idea, as usual. ❞
