Rhett had had what he would consider a “successful” day at work. He’d talked two or three kids out of stupid decisions, hadn’t made the biggest idiot of himself in front of his coworkers (if you don’t count Daniel) and hadn’t had anyone look at him like they knew he was hiding something.
If that isn’t success, Rhett doesn’t know what is.
Heading to his car, he’s got a stack of papers he’s meant to look over for the principal before the week’s out. He figured he’d go back to his hotel, google apartments again, read over all this stuff and eat pizza. It’s a solid plan.
What he isn’t expecting is for someone to be parked next to his car. Or for that someone to be looking at him. Rhett’s been running from the law since the 90s, he can tell when someone is a cop. It’s like, an innate feature for criminals. It takes two seconds for Rhett to realize that he’s being watched and one more to remember he’s not supposed to notice that stuff.
He thinks of an out quickly, letting a few of the papers blow away in the wind an darting off to the left to grab them off the ground. He hopes they weren’t that important, hoping that he’ll slip away from sight and the cop won’t notice him.
