Apparently a flag in which Kamikaze pilots signed before their flights. Can any one confirm?
from /r/vexillology Top comment: That is a yosegake hinomaru. Many, many Japanese servicemen would receive a flag signed by his friends and family with well-wishes and/or patriotic sentiments. These flags were sometimes looted from corpses or prisoners as war trophies. given its sentimental value to the dead man's family it's a super awkward thing to display in the US. There is a program to reunite these flags with descendants of their original owners, I believe. The probability that it is a pilot's flag is vanishingly small but I can't read Japanese at all so????
