The bell finally rang and you got out of your seat, collected your stuff and left. You went to walk down the freshman hallway like usual to get Charles but then you remembered his stupid comment from earlier. "Bye sweetie!" Rung in your ears as you stood there like a fool, blocking the hallway.
You wanted to wait for him, but you were just so upset with him. Why would he make a comment like that when you two weren't even dating? He knew enough not to call you pet names with the way his friends and some people in your grade would react to your friendship.
"[name]! [name]!" You got out of your own head when you heard someone calling your name. Infront of you was Charles, waving his hands in front of your face trying to get your attention.
"What?" You must've sounded irritated from the way his face dropped. "I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out after school, it's Wednesday, our day..." He said. Now he sounded upset, you could tell from the way he was refusing to look at you.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound mad. Also I was invited to hang out with Reo and Nagi, but I made them agree to bring you along so you didn't feel left out." You smiled at him, expecting him to be happy about this. He loved making new friends.
"What." He sounded like you'd told him you hated his guts. "Well I just thought we could hang out with them today, and just the two of us tomorrow..." you said. God you should've asked first.
By now you two were the only ones left in the hallway. Everyone else had long since ran home, it was Thursday, usually you didn't see this much excitement until Friday but with the big football game tomorrow you knew people would scatter to prepare.
"Let's just go hangout with them..." You said, trying to ease the tension that had built up between you two. You started walking and Charles followed behind, but he wasn't himself.
Reo had passed you a small note before the end of gym. You'd completely forgotten about it until you realized you didn't know where to go or who to contact.
You stopped halfway down the hallway near the main office of the school and started digging through your bag. "Fuck, fuck where is it?" You muttered to yourself.
"Whacha looking for?" Charles asked, peaking over your shoulder and peering into your backpack. "Reo's number." You responded, still preoccupied digging in your bag.
Tucked under your math textbook and crumpled to the point of almost tearing you found it. All it had on it was a number.
***-***-****, is my number. Call me after school
so we can make plans.
-Reo
You called the number and it didn't even get past the first ring. "Hey [name]!" He said cheerfully. "Let me text you where we're going to meet up." After that he hung up before you had the chance to even respond. But a few seconds later Reo sent you the location.
It was a small River that was behind the park. It was only about a mile walk from school, plus you and changes had probably missed the bus. You and Charles never missed the bus.
You had been to the River before. Swimming wasn't allowed but you could still do your legs in. There were also tons of flowers and trees around. On the side you would be on there would be a willow tree hanging over the edge of the river. You knew it would look even more beautiful than it had on the other side.
"Cmon, let's go." You smiled at Charles but he was still sulking. You knew he didn't like talking to new people, or you talking to new people but he couldn't be this mad over it. Right?
You basically dragged him through town the entire time, having to grab the back of his shirt and pull to stop him from dragging his feet. But that didn't stop his whining.
"Do we have to go? Why can't it just be us like usually?" He pouted. "It's always just us Charles, it's been like this for the past two years." You responded, dragging him by the t-shirt while he tried to dig his feet into the concrete sidewalk.
Eventually you got to the park. You were exhausted from dragging yourself and him here but you still did it.
You pushed open the gate to the park, dragging yourself through the playground. You and Charles had come here before a few times, you two had gone down the slide together, both of you squeezing into the blue tube and almost getting stuck. You chuckled at the thought.
"Hey, remember when we tried to squeeze into the blue tube slide together?" You laughed, pointing over at it. There was no one at the park, not even in the sand pit. "Yea, when it was just us and you weren't trying to abandon me for new people." He said back.
"Charles..." you started, but you couldn't finish it. You knew this would just go in circles with him. You sighed and kept going, still having to drag him behind.
Eventually you got to the spot and you saw Reo and Nagi setting up a picnic blanket. "Hey guys!" You called out from halfway down the trail. Reo waved back and Nagi just turned his head towards you.
You ran down the trail, dragging Charles with you. He seemed to only get grumpier with every step you took towards them.
You were in awe when you finally got out of the trees. Now you were in a small clearing with a giant willow tree hanging above, giant ropes of tree leaves hanging down. You could see the river running at the edge, there were a few rocks at the edges, likely to stop the rushing water from eroding the dirt and washing it down stream.
You walked slower now, mostly taking in the scenery while walking to the blanket. You weren't dragging Charles anymore. He was standing by the trail with his arms crossed, death glaring Reo and Nagi.
You went over to the blanket, sitting down on the edge closest to the river. You were sitting facing the river, back turned to all of them. You were admiring the sound of the rushing waves, the way the water look, the waterfall you could barely see in the distance.
"You like it here don't you?" Reo asked. He'd wrapped his arms around your waist and rested his head on your shoulder, just holding you. "Why are you so close?" You asked, trying to wiggle away from him.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. I'm used to being very close to my friends.." He backed away as he said it, releasing his hold on you. Charles, who previously seemed completely uninterested with socializing with these two was no coming over.
Once you turned around to face them he sat down next to you, wrapped an arm around you and laid his head on your shoulder "You know Reo, I like being close with my friends too." Charles was smiling, but he definitely didn't mean this kindly.
"You know me and [name] have been friends for a long, long time. I'm sure that if she wanted to be close with someone it would be me." Charles just kept adding fuel to an already out of control fire.
"Why don't we all calm down.." you tried to get them off of each other throats. "Well I'm sure she wouldn't want to be close with someone who couldn't even handle her having friends. I think she'd much rather someone who could take care of and protect her, wouldn't you, princess?" Reo looked like he was about to pop a blood vessel, you just couldn't tell if it would his or Charles'
"I don't think she wants you calling her princess." Charles retorted. "And I don't think she wants you that close when I could buy you three times over and still be wealthy." Reo said.
"Well I-" Charles started. "JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP, BOTH OF YOU." You yelled. They both stopped dead, staring at you like deers in headlights. "It's so annoying that both if you are just going back and forth about what I want, did either of you ever consider that maybe the person who would know me best is me?"
"I'm sorry.." Reo tried to apologize but you weren't having it. "Save it. If both of you hate each other so much then don't talk to each other, and Charles, get off of me." He looked hurt when you said it, but complied. He took his hands and heads off of you, but still sit close.
Nagi seemed to be passed out, sleeping on the blanket. "Let's just play a game or something so that no more fights like that happen. And if you guys do fight, it'll atleast be something small." You huffed.
Reo pulled out a board game from the picnic basket, it was almost like 4 player chess. After setting up Reo shook Nagi to wake him, but not even that worked.
“Wait I have an idea” you said, grabbing a red solo cup and going over to the river. You put the cup under, letting some water come in and fill it. Then you brought it back over and dumped it on nagi’s head, he woke up immediately.
“67!” He screamed out. All of you laughed your asses off. “Nagi we’re not in school!” Reo was rolling on the ground laughing, struggling to get the words out. Even Charles laughed at it, even if he tried to hide it.
Throughout the game Reo and Charles seemed to put aside their differences. They played normally, with the occasional competitive remarks but nothing like before. You were all finally having fun.
After that you all busted out the food. All of you except Nagi descended on it like vultures to a carcass, pulling your plates with everything you could.
“That was on my plate!” You said, holding Charles in a headlock while he ate the last slice of watermelon. “Asshole!” You screamed, stealing a bite out of his sandwich. Then Reo stole a strawberry from your plate “oh come on!” You couldn’t catch a break, could you?
After all of you ate you seemed tired, especially after the fighting over who got what. You were all laying or sitting, nagi being the only one actually doing anything, even if it was just a game on his phone.
“Hey Charles, there’s this really nice spot I know a bit east of here, wanna go see it with me?” Reo asked, pouring himself more punch.
It sounded fun, a nice spot. Up north was the hill, the rocky one that was notoriously hard to climb and was easy to get injured on. You’d never climbed it before, or climbed period, but you still wanted to see it. But you had to decide, butt in and ask to tag along or let them go together on their own.
