Float Pool

I love Float Pool. At first, when I started orientation I was a little hesitant about the idea of never truly having my own “home” or base unit. But now, I love it. I get to meet so many different people and make such diverse friendships. I get to see the same doctors for five different patients on three different floors in three days. I was warned during my hiring that “float pool can feel lonely sometimes”, but I have never felt that.

For those of you who are interested in branching out, Float Pool is awesome and worth a try!

Cardiac/Telemtry: check.

Neuro/Orthopedic: check.

Med-Surg: check.

I’ve oriented to all these units. Now I just have Renal/Dialysis, Oncology, and ICCU. Pray for my soul, children. This floater is gonna be on nursing knowledge overload.

The other day I was shadowing a nurse on Med-Surg and the census was super low which meant that the nurse I was with got to do a lot of teaching and spend time helping me learn the ins and outs. 

While I was charting he asked me, “So...were you pretty smart during college? You seem like the kind of person who got good grades.”

And I laughed a little and said, “I had to work twice as hard as everyone else in my class to get B’s.”

He nodded and then replied, “You know, I think you’ll take that work ethic and you’ll do good here. I think you’re gonna be a great nurse.”

And it was super encouraging, because then later I went to my manager’s office to talk with her about the schedule and she told me that the nurse I was with had already told her I was doing well that day. 

It was the best feeling ever.

Week One of Orientation

I am done with the first week.

Phew. If I can tell anything from this first week it’s that I’m going to be tired a lot for the rest of my life. 

But, I really like the organization I work for. I like the nurses and the staff and the culture that they have created here. It’s nice to be a little part of a big thing working towards creating change. It reminded me again that, yes, this IS what I want to do for the rest of my life. No second thoughts. And that feels good.

I do not know if I can accurately describe with words how excited I am to buy my first pair of scrubs.

I just filled out all my HR paperwork today and I start orientation on May 18! I. Am. So. Excited.
