Today was a rainy day in South Florida. Some of our resident animals were particularly enjoying this weather, including our gator Wally. Wally is a female American Alligator. Most people think of Alligators as green in color, but most have a darker coloring that enables them to camouflage better in dark, swampy water.

In honor of National Wildlife Day, we took out our native Florida gator for an educational program. Florida gators are considered a keystone species. That means they’re responsible for establishing an ecosystem/habitat for several other species of animals to inhabit as well. Without gators, Florida’s animal ecology would be in serious trouble. 

Note: licensed and trained professionals are responsible for handling all wild animals. Please do not try this at home.

Gators and rainbows and rockets…OH MY!! Today we were able to spend the day at the South end of Canaveral National Seashore. In the morning we were lucky enough to get a pretty good spot to watch the rocket launch from Kennedy Space Center. That was a cool experience for our first time. We could hear the rumble of the rocket even after it was out of our sight. 🚀 🚀 🚀 Then we drove through Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. We were determined to find a gator! We took out time driving Black Point Wildlife Drive. It paid off, we saw 3 gators!
