When I clicked the above titled article I was primed to read how “sexist” these men are, or how they manipulate “gender stereotypes,” or why the flower industry has a “gender gap” that excludes women. To my shock there was none of that because it wasn’t a feminist XXFactor article. It was an article from their Behold: Photo Blog on a photography series by a woman named Maggie Shannon. The whole article was just what it said it was - interesting photos of the hard working men in the Manhattan Flower District.

It got me to thinking though. What if it was a feminist article? How would a feminist writing for the XXFactor have interpreted the scene? I think it would have went something like this:

Today I walked through the Manhattan Flower District. I took photo after photo. There wasn’t a woman in sight. I asked myself, “How can an industry driven by the sale of flowers to twitterpated women have no women working in it?”

There was my answer right there. 

To say there is a sexist gender gap in the Manhattan Flower District is an insult to sexist gender gaps. While the insular world of Silicon Valley manages to let 30% of their boys club be populated by females, the Manhattan Flower District employs a whopping 0%. Considering that gardening has been “woman’s work” for eons, this disparity must have a more sinister motive.

“If we want to keep women in a constant state of feminine, lovelorn bliss, we can’t let them see the truth behind the scenes.”

That’s right. The Manhattan Flower District can’t afford to let women see how their marketing department infantilizes them. They can’t afford to let women see how they are objectified. They can’t afford to let women see how the whole flower industry is geared towards one thing; turn women into the giddly little trope all men want them to be.

Today I walked through the Manhattan Flower District. I took photo after photo. There wasn’t a woman in sight. Only afterward did I asked myself, “Why did you find this surprising?”

If Maggie Shannon had viewed the Manhattan Flower District through the eyes of a feminist, rather than a photographer, that is the article that would have been written without a doubt. Fortunately for these men, a camera lens has no agenda, nor did Ms. Shannon.
