Are there specialized florists that deal with say, wedding flowers, or funeral flowers and perhaps have special arrangements with wedding planners and wedding venues, or cemeteries and funeral homes? How could I write one?
There can be. I was planning to have my shop specialize in special occasion flowers like weddings and formal events. In order to support the business in that manner, having arrangements like you mention would be very beneficial. Most florists earn something in the range of 75% of their yearly income on 5 holidays. So if your florist is not providing flowers for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Easter, Christmas, etc, then they need to make sure they are getting enough work regularly to support the shop year round. Another thing to consider is that many florists really dislike the “wiring and taping” part of creating boutonnieres and corsages. It’s kind of fiddly and time consuming, especially since they can’t all be done the same way. A gerbera daisy will have the wire threaded up it’s thick stem, then bent over and anchored into the middle bit. A rose has the wire threaded through the base of the flower and then wrapped around the stem followed by tape wrapped around the stem to cover it. However, wiring and taping was one of my favorite things to do, so I think it’s perfectly believable if you have your florist enjoy it as well.
A florist that specializes in special occasions like this will probably only have a few display items at any given time and may not keep a lot of perishable flowers on hand. Wedding flowers should be planned well in advance and the order can be planned with the wholesale florist for delivery when needed. Funeral flowers are a different story since that’s usually not known as far in advance. However, depending on where your florist is, they may be able to have an arrangement with the wholesaler to deliver within a day or two when needed for funerals. ~*Mod Den*~
I have little to add to this. Actually just that I too love all the detail work that comes with making wedding bouquets and it would be my specialisation if I had my own shop.
With wedding flower arrangements usually also come car arrangements and table arrangements. I had to practice the former as well for my final just in case I would have chosen to make one.
