“Like a wildflower, she spent her days allowing herself to grow. Day 27: Must Reads
I got really behind on this but I'm determined to post for the last few days. My must reads thus far are:
The Harry Potter Series – I grew up on these books. They have such a clear view of good and evil but studies are starting to show that readers of the Harry Potter series had their political views influenced by the books!
Salt by Nayyirah Waheed – One of my best friends introduced me to this wonderful woman who so eruditely captures the experience of the diaspora. Powerful words, definitely check out her poetry you won't be disappointed and it will change your outlook.
A Place Called Here by Cecelia Ahern – A fun little beach read that asks the question: where do all the lost things go? From losing a sock to a person the book leaves you feeling a little lighter than before, like you may have lost something yourself.
How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by Walter Rodney – The only non fiction in the lineup this book changed how I view colonialism and its adverse effects on the continent (yup, it's a continent not a country y'all) of Africa. Being Kenyan born made this personal but everyone can learn a little something about colonial history from this.
Currently Reading:
Influence and the Science of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini – Recommended to me by Robyn Parry of MacLaren McCann to better understand the advertising industry (the career I eventually wanna get into).
The Third Coast: When Chicago Built the American Dream by Thomas Dyja – just for learning purposes
Waiting Until I Have More Time
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colour Blindness by Michelle Alexander – An exploration of the racial oppression that exists in the United States', the "War on Drugs" and criminal justice system as a whole. theatlantic is currently doing a book club reading on this but I have way too many other things on the go to join in. Sad I'm missing out.
Day 12: So I Could Feel Grown Up, I... dressed my little brother in my school uniforms and we hung out. I was never one of those girls who would dress up in her mama’s high heels. It seemed so odd to dress up and play that type of pretend. So I would pretend my brother was my younger sister and I was all grown up and we would just hang in my apartment and chat. I was weird. I’m still weird, I just own it now. Now: so I [can] feel grown up: I pump the ish out of this jam
