I drank silently in the living room, hearing the cries of Anna in our room and the cries of Edward in his room.
I knew I was wrong. I was beingirresponsible. I wasn’t playing fair.
In my hand was Anna’s ring.
I frowned. “This is stupid...” I told myself and with a burst of courage, I stormed to Edward’s room first, opened the door to find him in his bed, weeping loudly.
“M-Mommy!” he cried out. I smiled gently and slowly came towards him so that I was sitting down next to him. I patted his golden hair and with wiped his tears. He opened his eyes.
“What’s wrong, honey?” I asked. But he didn’t say anything as he was slowly crawling towards me and hugged me tightly. I wasn’t expecting that at all. He sniffled as he snuggled himself against my body, his little fingers gripping onto my clothes tightly until I had the thought that he would rip my shirt.
I touched his forehead when he didn’t say anything. So he was sick after all.
“W-Where’s Mommy?” he asked, his voice cracking as he spoke.
“Sleeping,” I lied. “And so should you, Eddy. You’re sick. Go back to sleep.”
“Is Mommy crying?” So he could hear her from all the way here, huh?
I was quiet, but with those worried eyes of his, I couldn’t help it but to nod. He asked why.
“I did a terrible thing to Mommy. But you need to sleep, Eddy—”
But suddenly, he was jumping down on the floor now, his little feet bouncing up and down. “Let’s cheer Mommy up!” he said, but he quickly groaned, bringing himself back to my laps and laid his head there. I smiled, letting my fingers smooth through his hair.
“When you get better, okay?” I whispered. Immediately, he shook his head.
“Please, Mom? I’m worried about Mommy.”
And I gave up with a sigh and a nod.
He was smiling so widely also as he quickly took my hand and dragged me out of his room and towards Anna and my room. The door was closed, of course. Edward looked up to me and I looked down to him, his little hand tightly gripping onto mine.
“Mommy’s in there,” he whispered, pointing at the door.
Of course she was. I could hear her crying loudly. And by then, I was feeling guilty.
“I’m gonna knock,” he murmured. I nodded.
“Get away from me, Elsa! I don’t want to see you!” I heard her cry out. And just like that, Edward’s smile was breaking apart and so was my heart. I opened my mouth to speak, but my son quickly interrupted.
“Mommy? It’s Eddy,” he said loudly. For a while, Anna was quiet and her crying softened into sniffles.
“Edward, not now. Go back to sleep,” she replied. And it was as if Edward didn’t even hear her when he quickly took the doorknob in his hand and turned it.
He looked back at me and had his index finger against his lips to hush me. I nodded, obeying my son.
We were lucky that the door wasn’t locked and Edward got in easily.
It felt like hours had passed since Edward went in there. I kept myself busy by twirling her ring around my fingers, thinking about how stupid I was, and how caring our son was.
Suddenly I was hearing laughter and I was startled by the light laughter of my beautiful wife that I tried to divorce. I smiled, never noticing that I had my fist against the door as I was about to knock. But I hesitated. I bit my lips, staring at the door as if it’d help me make a decision of whether or not I should go in, in some way.
And because I was a coward, an idiot, I backed away and leaned against the wall, hoping that at some point, someone would just come out and hug me whether it was from my son or from my wife. Maybe, even at some point, I was even hoping for my wife to just come out and slap me for being stupid—
The door was opened just a crack and I could see Edward’s teal eyes staring back at me. He had a huge smile across his face.
“Mom, go in,” he whispered as he got out.
I patted his head. “Thanks, Eddy. I’ll make it up to you.”
He nodded and quickly gave me a tight hug for a few long seconds, before he got to pull away with a smile. “I’m sleepy, Mom,” he yawned. I chuckled.
“Then would you like me to bring you back to bed?”
He frowned and quickly straightened his posture. “No! Edward’s a big boy! I’m gonna go by myself!” And so he ran off without even waiting for me to speak. I chuckled as he ran and it was like he wasn’t even sick at all.
With that, I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. “Anna.”
It was quiet for a while and I thought she didn’t want to see me. At least... not now.
“Come in, Elsa,” I heard. My heart was pounding and I was gulping as I pushed the door slowly. The room was dark and cold. The air conditioner was on and Anna was just laying in bed with layers of blankets covering her from head to toe. Her head peeked out from the blankets, teal eyes staring back at me.
She slowly sat up. I felt disgusted with myself. She was crying so hard. Her eyes were red, her hair was a mess and she was still sniffling—and why was she smiling in the process?
For a while, we just stared at each other in silent, not knowing where to begin.
But I decided to start instead. I walked over to her and still, she kept her eyes on me.
“Come lie down with me,” she said. I shook my head. I didn’t deserve to be in the same bed as her.
“Anna, I... I’m sorry. I was being stupid. I was tired but,” I chuckled, “I know that’s only an excuse and I don’t even know what has gotten into me lately. I really didn’t mean what I said to you before—
And suddenly, she took my waist and quickly brought me to bed so that now, I was lying on top of her instead. I tried getting off of her, but she had her arms wrapped tightly around my neck, her hands in my shoulder, her beating heart against my ears. I blinked.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” she asked. “Something’s wrong with you. How dare you even resort to divorce as a solution of our situation? How dare you?” she whispered.
I closed my eyes, wrapping my arms around her. She was warm. “I’m sorry, I was stupid.”
“How dare you make me cry?”
“How dare you make your sick son come to me and comfort me when you were supposed to be the one to do that from the beginning?”
“You are an idiot. You stupid, stupid idiot!” she began shouting, suddenly hitting me from the back with her fists. It was painful, but I was laughing as she now had her palm around my rear, slapping and even squeezing it every now and then. Now she had her palms around my cheeks as she pressed her lips against mine. I had my fingers in her hair, massaging her scalp as I let her kiss me over and over again until I was already trying to contain moans that were threatening to come out.
We pulled away, our eyes meeting.
“Forgive me?” I asked, bringing her hand towards me and because I had her ring on me, I slowly put it back to where it really belonged. I could sense her grinning, but as she coughed, she frowned again.
I sighed, nodding and smiling at her. “Then how should earn back the beautiful wife that I once adored?”
“You could start by laying down next to be.”
I rolled over next to Anna and stared at her. “Next?” I asked as I played with her hair. She giggled, but quickly put up a fake frown.
“Now repeat after me: By the order of Princess Anna...”
I sighed. “By the order of Princess Anna...”
She smiled, nodding. “Good. Okay, by the order of Princess Anna, I will not say a single word associating with the word, divorce.”
“By the order of Princess Anna, I will not say a single word associating with the word, divorce.”
“I will not make Princess Anna cry sad tears.”
“I will not make Princess Anna cry sad tears.”
“I will love and adore her until the very end.”
“I will love and adore her until the very end.”
“And I will buy her chocolate every single day.”
“And I will— Wait, what?”
“What?” she asked, pinching my cheeks and even pouting at me too. “I said repeat after me!”
I sighed. “And I will buy her chocolate every single day.”
“For the rest of my life.”
This was ridiculous. “For the rest of my life.”
“And finally, I will be treating her like an actual princess.”
And as ridiculous as this was sounding, I went along with it anyway. “And finally, I will be treating her like an actual princess. Are we done?”
She shook her head. “Nope! You have to kiss me now.”
I chuckled. “Anna this is—”
“Kiss me!” How feisty. So I leaned in and kissed her.
“Are we done, Princess Anna?” I asked and she nodded with such a happy grin on her face.
“Now go buy me chocolate, my servant.”
