Fluffing up can mean a few things depending on the context and type of fluffing, in this case Toto was poofed up because he was comfortable and prepping for a nap. His body, chest and wing coverts all puff up to retain warmth, allow their foot to be tucked up, and have somewhere to tuck their beak in for a nap.
Fluffing can also be used aggressively as an attempt to make themselves look larger and provide a barrier so if they do get bit the enemy gets a mouthful of feathers and doesn’t reach their actual body. This is usually coupled with other aggressive behaviours like an open beak, hissing, lunging, swaying, or striking nearby objects to ward off threats. This fluffing also tends to look different, usually with a focus on an inflated nape of the neck and rump depending on the species.
Lots of big feelings today
I’ve been binge-watching Dre/am Ho/me Make/over on Net/flix and it features this pretty cute and wholesome married couple who run a design studio and they’re also pretty funny and in the episode I was watching today this happened.
And I’m like.

He likes to fluff. He will fluff anything that can be fluffed.
He fluffed the tree.
I’m like 98% positive he knows what a fluffer is. How can he say he fluffed a tree until it was ready for ornaments to be put on it and not know?

I finally, finally get around to watching the Try Guys final act at Vidcon and right when it gets to the part where Thomas Sanders enters I busted out bawling. I have no clue what happened or why, but I was crying ;-;
