Erica Stine's Sustainable Fly-Ash Chair,
In an effort to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) furniture design graduate student Erica Stine created the Fly-Ash chair, a modern and eco-conscious chair constructed entirely of recycled coal waste.
The Fly-Ash Chair is constructed of a geopolymer concrete primarily comprised of waste from coal-based power plants. The volume of ash byproduct in each chair is the energy equivalent of a 100W lightbulb powered for 24 hours a day for 115 days.
The sustainable furniture design concept recently earned a notable honor in the 2020 international Red Dot Design Competition's "Home Furniture" category.
