do you think they're pulling a pokemon reburst with Ash's Greninja?
No, I don’t think so. Or, at least, not in the sense where I think Ash and Greninja are going to literally fuse bodies. This is what I think:
The writers of the anime want to give Ash a mega, but they don’t want Ash to actually have a key stone. Why? Well, think about it. The anime isn’t going to end here. Some people think it will end after Kalos, but I can almost guarantee that it won’t. It will go on as the games go on. Getting back to the key stone–the writers don’t want to give Ash a key stone because they don’t want him having it going into generation VII. You might think “but if they don’t want him to have a key stone, then why not just have him leave it at home?” For this, you have to keep in mind what Diantha said in her appearance episode–she didn’t want to give Professor Sycamore her key stone to study, because it’s what connected her heart with Gardevoir’s. She felt strange not having it. It’s precious to her. Once a trainer has a key stone, it’s something they don’t want to let go of. So of course, if Ash had a key stone, naturally he isn’t going to just leave it back in Pallet Town while he travels thousands of miles away to another region. They wanted a way to avoid that.
But they still wanted Ash to somehow CONNECT to mega evolution. So, instead of giving Ash a REAL mega, they’re probably making up their own fusion concept where Greninja kind of takes on Ash’s appearance upon linking with his heart. This way, Ash doesn’t need to have a key stone, Greninja doesn’t need to have a mega stone, and Ash can still be as OP as someone who has a normal mega Pokemon. I’m going to guess this fusion somehow connects to the sundial in Anistar City. We can see it in the poster, so it’s obviously going to paly an important role. Not to mention, we know it has something to do with mega evolution. As such, I think Greninja will recieve an altered form because of that sundial–a form that connects him to Ash in the same way a Pokemon who can mega evolve connects to their trainer.
Imo though, I think this is a stupid idea and is easily avoidable. I think Ash still could have gotten a mega and not had a key stone going into gen VII in one way or another (meaning, I think they could have found a way to do it). BUT this is all just a guess. I could be completely wrong, and I probably am.
