Japanese or Pacific Flying Squid (Todarodes pacificus), family Ommastrephidae, order Oegopsida, found in the North Pacific

This species can shoot out of the water and glide at distances of up to 30 m over the ocean's surface, using their fins and membranes between the arms and tentacles.

I think I’ve mentioned before how I like flying squids (as in squids of the family Ommastrephidae), but if you wanna see how many I have:

There’s also 1 unfinished character who technically exists but I’m not working on them actively.

It is theoretically possible for me to straight up run out of unique flying squid species, since there’s only like 24 species in the whole family. I’d prefer to not repeat genera so that narrows things down further. (All species highlighted in red are represented by a character of mine)

I don’t think I’d actually make a character for each genus unless I actually have a decent concept though. So idk if my “collection” will be growing anytime soon lol.

🦑 Daily Cephalopod Fact: 🦑

Neon Flying Squid: They are so named for their ability to shoot out of the water, much like flying fishes. They sometimes unintentionally land on the decks of ships. This happens more frequently during rough weather or in the presence of predators in the vicinity, and it is presumed that this behavior is an instinctive response to threat. Flying squid have been observed to engage in behaviors that prolong the time it remains in the air, making it more akin to actual flight than just gliding.
