hi i love your meteorological fiction project i think the paintings are absolutely stunning but you got me interested in clouds so: where did you learn about the different types, species, varieties etc?
Hello! Apologies for taking so long to reply, things have been quite hectic lately.
I'm so glad you like the reports, thank you so much!
I've previously given a few references, but I don't mind going a bit more in depth about this.
I only knew about a few basic cloud types back when I started. I just stumbled upon a basic cloud guide by Richard Hamblyn while I was in the library one day, and I pretty much went from there. Now, I tend to recommend a different book from the one I first got, if only because mine was a bit more of a collection of pictures.
The one I recommend is The Pocket Cloud Book by Richard Hamblyn, which has gotten an updated edition a couple years ago. It's great, it's cheap, it's small, but it's got all the basic things you might want as a beginner, and you can have it on you at all times so you can use it to identify clouds in the wild. I say this a lot, but I think it's the most important part in learning about clouds. Pictures are great, and they teach you a lot, but being outside and watching the clouds change makes a real difference, because they're always. changing. Cumulonimbus, for instance, look so wildly different from one stage to the next.
Now, there are also wonderful free resources here on the Internet. I favour these ones that I've given before:
What's This Cloud explains in simple terms the different types and subtypes of clouds. There are diagrams, identification lessons, a very helpful free e-book.
Cloud Appreciation Society is one of my favourite websites. It features a gallery of pictures submitted by observers from the whole wide world that you can easily sort through, though not every picture is tagged super thoroughly. There's also a message board, clouds-related news, and so on.
The International Cloud Atlas by the WMO is a treasure trove, and a great official source for meteorology. It goes in depth on all the meteorological phenomena that have been officially identified. Want to read about the orographic influence on clouds? Ohohoh, have fun on the International Cloud Atlas!
I'd also like to mention you can easily find PDFs of On the Modification of Clouds by Luke Howard (1803), an essay that exposes the clouds nomenclature that we still use to this day. It's kind of fascinating, and it's got lovely illustrations.
Overall though, it's a lot of trial and error. I still struggle a lot. I forget all the names sometimes. But it's fantastic, I love learning about clouds.
wHat is.mortaly coiled
OH FUCK YESSSS hi. im going to be so noraml about this question.
mortally coiled is my big huge large oc story ive been working on for almost 10 years now. its everything to me
at this point its so hugelarge that its genuinely kind of difficult for me to write out a summary but im going to do my best. it is NOT a short summary because theres way too much shit going on to make it actually short. But this IS the heavily condensed version.
SO. FIRST OF ALL. its split into 4 parts that i tend to call Cycles. so if i say something like c1 c2 etc thats what i mean. Each cycle is relatively seperate from the rest but they all take place in the same world + theres a handful of characters who show up in multiple cycles
Cycle 1 follows Null and Nil. They are each one half of Sar'kai, who is effectively the god of destruction. They are both approached seperately by different pairs of Sundogs (ie minor gods of destruction) who want to restore the big main god of destruction by having their chosen guy kill the other one. Unfortunately Null ends up going on a awesome road trip with their Sundog enterage and discovers the power of friendship which fucks everything up forever. At the end Nil ends up dead, Null ends up petrified as solid stone, and the Sundogs involved all end up either traumatized, disgraced, or dead. btw this is my favorite cycle and Null is so important to me. This isnt part of the summary i just need to express that Null is the most special lizard ever and im extremely bias here
Cycle 2 follows two organizations: the Children of the Unseeing Eye and DIRE, both of which are key parts of the Third Infinite Empire. The Children (and later the Infinite Empire) are formed by Rasputin. It is effectively a cult based off some bullshit that Rasputin made up. He specifically formed it in order to gain enough power and influence to track down and kill Sundogs using "the godkiller knife" which is actually Nil's tail spine plundered off his corpse lol. Rasputin uses the knife and the power stolen from Sundogs to ascend to dragonhood (the details of what makes someone a dragon isnt important rn all that matters is that this is a Big Deal and makes him really powerful. And also fucks Rasputin up a lottttt). His end goal is to BECOME one of the big three gods, who are Hark (creation) Lythe (balance) and Sar'kai (destruction). He is comvinced that he needs two other people to also become gods for this to work, so he brings in Gazer and Tansy. Gazer gets pulled into it pretty deep (to the point where he ALSO becomes a dragon via cool knife) but Tansy kind of fucks off eventually before things get ugly. So now its just Rasputin and Gazer, and eventually Gazer ends up killing Rasputin because Rasputin is literally the worst. Meanwhile DIRE is kind of doing its own thing and building robots and doing unethical experiments. Theres a handful of sentient robots and theres a lot going on here but all thats really relevant for the summary is that they lose funding, the robots go rogue, the main scientists have a crisis of faith, and the only two guys left are a gene freak who was raised in the lab and became the head scientist by default when everyone else quit (Doc Deadly) and a failed bioweapon (Living Handsome). Gazer, now the head of the Thied Infinite Empire, tries to bring back DIRE and use LH as an actual living weapon. Doc and LH then also fuck off and eventually the cycle ends with all of the characters who fucked off meeting up to beat the shit out of Gazer. And also at the end Null gets unpetrified because there was a side thing going on with that but dont worry about it. Its fine.
Cycle 3 follows two sets of characters: The Novice + Brutus and Kakisto + Hellkite. Brutus is a guy living in a communal home with a buch of his friends until theres a big disaster and tons of them die immediately. Someone shows up who Brutus (heavily injured, actively dying) assumes is there to help. Instead Brutus watches this person actively finish off his best friend and sevral other people who mightve survived if they had gotten medical attention. Before Brutus dies, he's visited by The Novice (who was actually established in cycle 1 but this is already super long so dont worry about it) who effectively offers Brutus the opportunity to get revenge in exchange for being The Novice's best buddy forever. Brutus agrees. They find out that the whole thing was orchestrated by a Mooncat (ie minor god of creation) named Judge in an attempt to create a new Mooncat. And MEANWHILE kakisto and hellkite are actually former servents of Judge (theyre angels. Which has a different context in mortally coiled than the normal definition) except they both kind of suck at their job according to Judge so they get fired and replaced by a cooler angel. Kakisto and Hellkite both blame each other for this and go do their own thing but they eventually get forced back together. Eventually both The Novice + Brutus and Kakisto + Hellkite meet and bond over hating Judge. Um. Havent actually figured out how this cycle ends beyond this. But something happens yayyyyy
Cycle 4 is a roadtrip arc following an undead lizard (Lungfish) trying to escape from her preternatural link to the lich that revived her (Boghast), an archeologist (Razar) trying to stop her undead girlfriend (Bailey) (undead for entirely different reasons than the lizard btw) from indiscriminately killing people to preserve "the secret," a loser cowboy raptor (Lucky Shot) who recently having been sold a fake gun learned that he is a mage capable of casting one single spell (bullet) who is just trying to find a purpose in life, and an immortal prophet literally older than dirt (Khetzal) who is trying to make ammends for the fact that he ate the sun. Theres a lot more to this cycle but i think thats a pretty good snippet at least for the vibes of this one lol
so. yup. Theres a lot happening. And I think I made an actual full summary of everything happening in mortally coiled in chronological order at some point so i might dig that up if youre interested in getting the actual full plot summary of it. Theres so much going on that i left out like 50 percent of the major characters and plot beats in order to make any of this even slightly readable
☕️ cheese
I LOOOOVE CHEESE im lactose intolerant but its one of the dairy products that Doesnt make me sick. i love most cheeses ive had id love to try more of them I Freaking Love Cheese. also it makes me sad when people bash american cheese when theyre actually just thinking of kraft singles which are. a completely different food honestly. actual american cheese tastes different and also!!! has a specific use and its that its super melty, more than a lot of other cheeses. it has its niche! that being said there are some bad american cheeses out there regardless. but truly i think you can find a bad version of just about any cheese youre looking for
