Music Saturday: Fly Young
Now, when it comes Hip Hop and the successful aspects of rap music, everyone has their own opinion on where the industry is going. Many OG’s and young upcoming hip hop icons have been debating on this topic and how the styles of the past have been swept under the rung with the new generations ‘mumble rap’. Diss tracks, social media wars, old school vs new school in the Hip Hop community is starting to quickly and unapologetically divide.
Hip Hop for me was something that I knew and felt was deeper than even R&B, and y'all know I’m junkie for that. Honestly, I didn’t start listening to Hip Hop until Lil Wayne and T.I. and at first I wasn’t sold. Don’t get me wrong, they were dope! However, I knew there was 'more’ to just 'gettin b*****, gettin money’. It wasn’t really until I got older where I started to reach deep into the archives of Rap and Hip Hop and I fell in love the lyricism that embodied this industry.
This is defiantly what I see in Fly Young! Like I said, when it comes to music period for me, lyricism is everything. A native of Detroit born and raised, Darrius Walker embodies everything that I think us as musics lovers and critics look for in 'true’ hip hop. His lyricism flows like the Detroit river, calm and settle with a killer flow. However, spits realism through his lyrics while not only discussing his life past and present, but the future of not only his city, but his life.
Fly Young is NOT the 'typical’ average Detroit rapper. See, as a native of the D, we have ALOT of hype, turn-up, club bangers and that’s cool. However, Fly_Young is different. Now, don’t get me wrong, he has some Clubbangerz bruh. But what sets him apart from the pack is his ability to stay true to him and his craft.
When you listen to 'Dear World’ or 'Rep’ which are my favorites, the flow and style is so different from the Detroit style. He is definitely SLEPT on. I’ve personally listening to him since our high school days ✊🏾, so his growth and lyricism is something that this new generation Hip Hop is not ready for. Y'all need to get woke, period.
