" i think what i work in already speaks for itself doesn't it? but i'll explain it here as well; i would rather have a major hand in the lyrics, production and concept we release as a group and as a solo artist. i think that is what has the potential to leave traces, sure a music video, choreography and styling are great but for me it's the music that makes everything. when the concept and song are just right, that is when everything else that follows also falls into place? if the song is bad, a good music video can only do so much after all. " isn't this a pretty difficult question for me? i don't know how to measure them because in my eyes all of the above are pretty similar in their ways but if anything, i guess gold star media? the ceo there seems the most personable out of the three, when i auditioned gold star media wasn't even a company yet. i don't think i would have auditioned for them back then since they were a new company, things have worked out well for them though regardless. but yes, i think i would rather be in gold star media, my reason is very simple. "

" least favorite part about being an idol, in the beginning, it was the lack of sleep and freedom for sure. now as i have gotten older i still view think that lack of sleep is one of the worst things about being an idol. for those that have family, i am sure there are other things that are important as well. such as not being able to see their family, i can't really relate to that but i can see why that would be difficult as well. if anything, i regret not being able to visit my grandmother's grave more often. "

" my favorite part about being an idol is hands down getting up on stage and singing, though i am already this old. i am not sure if it's alright to call me an idol anymore but every time i go on stage, i always feel happy. unless it is something that has happened, there has rarely been a moment in my career where going on stage caused me to feel frustrated or stress. if anything it relieves it. sure there have been moments where going on stage hasn't been the solution but the majority of the time, going on stage is my favorite thing as an idol. "

“ why are the questions like this? but still isn’t it better to have a good reputation but be rather unknown? because at least then you wouldn’t be in any scandals and your songs and music could still do fairly well regardless amongst the people that like you? i do think that is the most important thing for me, to sing on stage for the people that like me. ”

“ i will be shameless and say that i think our first release of 2018 was my happiest and proudest because we came back after a year of not releasing anything. seeing the album do well regardless, considering we were on our tenth year, despite our members and their different interests. it shows how good our friendship is and i think that is what makes me the proudest. ”

“ i have learned that people change after they receive fame and money, even i have changed to some degree. i think a few years after debut the change was more prominent. i thought that i would always be in great shape and have the same energy but i don’t and now i have to work harder. i have to work hard to be a role model, but it’s difficult and i wish i didn’t have to work so hard. ”

“ i think if i were to change anything, it would have to be how they expect us to be so perfet all the time. going on my 13th year, with barley any big scandals under my belt is difficult. i am sure there are not one person alive, that can go through their life and not make mistakes. we get punished so heavily for them, the most by the public and i think i would like that to change. their view on us as produts, we are people too. ”

10. if you were auditioning for your company today, what would you perform for your audition, or what would you change from your original audition?

“That depends, do I have the skills I have nowadays or do I have the skills I had back then? If I had the skills I had back when I first auditioned I wouldn’t at all because I doubt I would pass also I’m too old now for that. But if I had the skills I have nowadays, maybe I would sing Kim Ahjoong’s Maria? It’s a good party trick, always impresses people.”

11. if you could do any special stage, what would it be and who would it be with?

“I’m a really big fan of Silhouette, so for a special stage I think it would be really cool to cover a song of theirs. Hush, maybe? Since I think everybody has covered that song it would be cool to do it as well, especially because I don’t think I’ve ever done anything on a more sexy side. I think it would be fun to do that with Minhee sunbaenim (@fmdminhee), Yena sunbaenim (@fmdyena) and Seolhwa sunbaenim (@fmdseolhwa).”

12. what career opportunities would you like to pursue that you’ve yet to, or what achievements would you like to obtain that you’ve yet to?

“Well, I would love to debut solo. Dimensions, if you’re listening to this, could you maybe give me a solo debut? I can sing, I can dance, what else do you want? Besides that, I think it would be fun to do more photoshoots, I would like to go into fashion as well. But as a designer, not so much working as a model, even though I had fun at the runway show I participated for the event.”

13. if you could become a model or ambassador for any brand, what would you choose?

“I don’t think high end stuff necessarily means better but I know that if I want to be taken seriously it’d be good to have my face on something more… high fashion? Something like Prada, or Chanel, or Givenchy. Anything in those lines. But I’d also love to work with Korean brands, especially smaller ones so I can support local designers and maybe give them some of the attention they wouldn’t get otherwise.”

14. if you could be on any variety show, which one (or which type of one) would you want to be on?

“None, I don’t think I would do well during variety shows. I’m not funny so I can’t be the funny one that tells funny jokes. I’m not entertaining and I think my charm is limited to my looks. If I absolutely had to choose something I would go with Doremi Market. I have really good memory for choreography and I also know a lot of songs, so I think I would do well there.”

15. if you were offered the chance to become a ceo of an entertainment company, new or existing, would you take it? why or why not?

“No, I don’t want to contribute to this industry any more than I already do. And honestly, I think business administration should be left to people who are actually competent at that and I’m not one of those people. A lot of the bullshit that comes out about companies is because people who are not good at doing business or who are just thirsty capitalists don’t realise that what they are doing is fated to failure.”

1. what is your favorite single you’ve released?

“I think the obvious answer for me here would be something from the nightmare realm concept, wouldn’t it? But actually I really like Fingertip. I like the retro vibes of it, and I like that it’s still very normal realm without having to pander to a super innocent concept. If I had to pick one from the nightmare realm though I’d say You and I. I love the song and the choreography the most out of everything we’ve released so far.”

2. what are your favorite b-sides/non-title tracks you’ve released?

“I honestly think we have so many good b-sides! Sleep-walking is one of them. I like that the song has a sound that is very refreshing for us? Not a rock song or a more cutesy pop song, but still feels very us, you know? But also I really like Wake Up which is just straight up an anime theme song. To be fair with the normal realm, I like Click enough. It’s not great or anything but not as annoying as the rest.”

3. what is your least favorite song (title track or b-side) you’ve released?

“I dislike pretty much every single song from the normal realm other than a handful of them, to be honest. And it’s not out of pettiness or anything, I just genuinely don’t think most of them hold a candle to the nightmare realm ones. But Love Whisper has to be my most hated for the simple fact that Dimensions was going on such a great path with Fingertip and they decided the best alternative was to go with something so… beige. Ugh. I hate it.”

4. if you could do a duet with anyone in the industry, who would you choose?

“Hmm, from women I’d pick Mirae @miraefmd or Hui @fmdhui ? I just really like Silhouette, I think they are one of the best girl groups out there. I honestly really like BEE and Lipstick as well, but Silhouette has a really fun edge to them that makes them special and the other senior girl groups don’t have as much of. From men… Maybe Taejin @fmdtaejin ? I think having two good singers in a song is always fun and you can’t deny he’s talented”.

5. what do you think of your/your group’s concept?

“I get why Dimensions decided to do what they did by having a dual concept but currently I don’t understand the point of it if by now they have basically abandoned the nightmare concept. I do hope next year we get to go back to it, because I don’t know how much it’s worth for them to alienate our fanbase that came for that so much just for some digital hits that won’t give us longevity. I’m biased in favor of the nightmare realm because I just like rock and rock influenced music. My biggest issue with the normal realm are some of the outfits we have to wear. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’m like… objectively a hot person. I have a hot body. I look like a porn star when I’m wearing a cute dress.”

6. what is one thing (a concept, a genre, an outfit, etc.) you would least like your company make you do?

“Whatever Femme Fatale is doing. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t particularly like the cuter side of our concept either and I hate that I have to do it, but I at least admire the fact that Lucid has a concept. For as much as teacher Dongwook seems to be on something when he thinks of that stuff for us, at least there’s some level of artistry to it. Femme Fatale is just… noise and they get hundreds of millions of views for that, which is annoying to say the least.”

12. what career opportunities would you like to pursue that you’ve yet to, or what achievements would you like to obtain that you’ve yet to?

“Where do I start? I want to release solo music. That was the goal, really, from the beginning, and it will happen before Femme Fatale’s contract expires if it’s the last thing I do. I want to go on television more and perform on stage in front of people more. I’d like to hold my own solo concert one day and model for brands and magazine covers. I might even give acting a spin, who knows?”

13. if you could become a model or ambassador for any brand, what would you choose?

“I want to sign a deal with a luxury brand or two. Prada, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Versace, Valentino. I’ll leave my options open as long as the brand isn’t hideous and I can connect with it artistically. Besides that, I want to be a soju model one day. Chamisul or Chum Churum are the obvious choices there.”

14. if you could be on any variety show, which one (or which type of one) would you want to be on?

“A music or art variety show or one based on puzzles and problem-solving. Why not both? I can do both, so it’s a shame I haven’t really gotten to show it. Shows with physical competitions aren’t really my style, but at this point, I’d take the offer to have something to do and to show my face on television.”

15. if you were offered the chance to become a ceo of an entertainment company, new or existing, would you take it? why or why not?

“Where I am now, I’m not done with what I can do as an idol. I wouldn’t have to quit being an idol to be a CEO, but I’m not at Bang Sunyoung level yet to be starting or taking over my own company, so I wouldn’t take the offer now. That doesn’t mean I’ll never decide to kickstart my own company. If I feel I have something I can offer as a CEO that the industry is missing, I’ll take up the mantle.”

25. what is your least favorite part of being an idol?

“There are times it doesn’t feel very stimulating or fulfilling. From the outside, it seems exciting and ever-changing, but in truth, it’s a lot of the same cycle over and over again. Femme Fatale doesn’t even restart that cycle as often as most and I’ve still noticed it. If I was given more individual activities, that might switch things up some for a short time at the very least, but that hasn’t happened yet.”

26. what is your favorite part of being an idol? 

“Being influential. That could sound conceited or attention-starved, but everyone wants to be in a position where people care what they do and have to say. This only applies to be an idol in a successful group, but people listen to our music. That’s what any creative wants: someone to listen.”

27. would you rather be incredibly famous with a terrible reputation and hated by most or be fairly unknown with a good reputation and adored by those who know of you? why?

“Real life is never that binary. There are any number of people out there well-loved and well-known and likewise for those no one’s heard of who exist in a world of scorn. There’s a lot to be said for a good reputation, just as there’s a lot to be said for being adored. If I had to? I’d be famous with a bad reputation.”

28. what moment in your career are you proudest of so far?

“Saying debuting to a question like this makes you sound like the idol version of someone who peaked in high school. I won’t say that, but our debut era was a great source of pride for me. Every time we come back with a new song and it does well, I feel proud. Holding our first ever concert is probably my proudest moment so far.”

29. what have you learned about yourself and/or society since becoming a celebrity?

“Everyone learns about themselves and society as they grow up. Whether they’re a celebrity or not, everyone is always learning, so there’s hundreds of answers I could give to this. As far as what I’ve learned as a result of being a celebrity, I’ve learned just how much I don’t like being limited by outside forces. I don’t want to be told what to be or what to do. I’d like to decide that myself.”

30. what would you like to change about how society views or treats idols?

“Everyone should be more compassionate to everyone. Celebrities may be a standout in the lack of compassion people can receive, but that’s because we’re viewed as larger than life. It’s how everyone treats everyone else on the street, blown up and multiplied by thousands. Anything I’d change about how society views or treats idols, I’d change about how they view or treat other people to. By nature, though, people are prone to judgment and the desire to feel higher than others. It’s not an easy change to make just by wishing.”

“this is pretty difficult because i’ve overall been pretty satisfied with things as they have been so far... of course i wish that the company would actually do more to confirm or deny the rumours about our rigged results, but that’s how it is... oh wait! if anything i wish -- and man, haru would kill me if this came true -- that they wouldn’t make us do that many choreographed tracks per album! gold star ceo? please? you’re seriously killing me here!”

if you could be in any idol group, which one would you choose?

“oh man. can’t i just remain in vive? i still have so much left to do as things are right now, so i don’t see the point in joining another group just yet! but of course, to entertain the question... i think i’d want to be in a group like charm. we have a bit of the same concept and it’s kind of my style so i think i might fit right in... but they’re much better dancers than me so maybe not. i might die if i had to perform their choreographies with such synchronisation! man, they’re really just amazing aren’t they?”

if you could say one thing to your ceo, what would it be?

“this won’t be passed on right? like for real, it’s just private, right? oh man, even if it’s just a what-if situation and even though it’ll never come out i’m still kind of nervous about speaking out of line! but, here goes... pd nim! bang sunyoung ssi! please debunk the goddamned rumours already instead of just burying them! you’re not doing any of us a favour because it just looks suspicious that you won’t confirm or deny anything! ah, that was nerve-racking...”

what do you do to relieve the stress of idol life?

“i really like to occupy the shower. somehow when you stand in there all your worries just wash away! and then i sing. preferably both at the same time. i’ve held many concerts in the shower room so far and i have to say i think my shower head is my biggest fan! somehow i think the members might not be equally impressed. the other day i’m pretty sure i heard haru ( @fmdharu ) yell at me to finish up or he’d break in and force me out. maybe i should think a bit more about my water usage too.”

what tips would you give to a trainee about to debut?

“this might sound incredibly clichéed, but i want to say that they shouldn’t give up on their dream if they really want to pursue it. the road ahead might look dark and rough, and it’s definitely not going to be any easier once you actually reach debut, but at least you tried. at least you can stand there in the end and say that you made it. i know it’s far from everyone who has as big a success history right off the bat as we have had so far, i know many groups are struggling even years after debut. it’s not a flowery road at all, but if it’s really what you want to do, it will be worth it in the end. that’s what i believe.”

what was the hardest part of being a trainee?

“probably a very typical answer as well, but the uncertainty. the fear that even though you put everything you have into it, you might be laid off because you’re not improving enough or because someone better came along. it gets worse and worse the longer you train and when you see those younger than you or those who have trained less time than you be chosen for debut lineups instead. it’s hard. really hard. to keep yourself motivated that is. i admire those who can keep on training for up to ten years maybe even -- i don’t think i could have continued for that long myself.”

did you enjoy the lifestyle of a trainee or of a debuted idol more?

“i don’t think i can really say much about this yet. i’ve been a trainee for around six years, but only a debuted idol for two months, everything is still so new that it seems amazing and overwhelming. evenifi say idol life now, that might change in the future when i get accustomed to everything after all. right now it seems like the dream come true, but even dreams become daily life some day. that’s just how it is even though it’s sad. but in the end i think i’d still pick life as a debuted idol over life as a trainee, because it’s much easier for me to accomplish my goal of making people smile like this, and it will continue to be so in the future.”

what one song or album by another group or soloist would you have liked to release yourself?

“bohemian rhapsody. nothing will ever get as iconic as that one song, so imagine being the creator behind it. i don’t know a single person who doesn’t know it or have at least heard of it even if they don’t know the lyrics or melody. as for kpop songs... i really like charm’s smile flower or pinwheel. i’ve always really liked listening to ballads and charm has some amazing ones that really show off their vocal talent. i really admire them.”

describe your dream sub-unit (members and concept).

“we’re already such a small group that if you were to take away some of our members we’d barely remain! i think it would be really cool though maybe for a concert or something to do accoustic arrangements of some of our songs! like i can imagine a really emotional rendition of nap of a star. i’d pick me, hyun ( @fmddaehyun ), and blue ( @fmdkyubok ) for this. and then haru ( @fmdharu ) and rioh ( @fmdrioh ) could do some amazing dance performance and show off their real talent! both of them are so good at dancing i’m sure they might even go viral for it if they had a chance to let loose as they please!”

“definitely lyrics. lyrics have always mattered a lot to me because they’re the whole essence of the song, the meaning, the interpreation. you can really capture emotions with lyrics and make people listen to your songs in a whole different way and relate to it. that’s why i like our title track crown so much myself. i think it’s a very relateable song and that it has a really good message, and i really hope we can continue making songs like that in the future!”

which of the two other companies (out of bc, dimensions, and gold star) you are not currently signed under would you rather be an artist in?

“hm, both of them have their ups and downs so it’s kind of hard to pick... in the end i think that it doesn’t as much depend on the company but the group you’re in. if you have awful chemistry with your team mates it doesn’t matter where you are, it’ll still be just as bothersome. but for the sake of picking one, i’d pick dimensions, that’s where my best friend is after all!”

what is your least favorite part of being an idol?

“that has to be the fact that we have little control over ourselves. i know we signed a contract on this, but the moment you sign that you kind of sell away your entire self down to your personality. we are owned by our company and if we dare to even think out of line it won’t go about unpunished. i don’t like it but at the same time i deal with it. i don’t matter really, i’ve sold my soul for other’s sake and that’s the only thing that matters to me.”

what is your favorite part of being an idol?

“that’s easy. the fan interactions. even if what we’re selling through fansigns and stuff like that is just the image the fans want to see, i think there’s also something real in that image. others might not agree with me, but i don’t think you can build a character without putting at least some of yourself into it. if you did, you would either lose the facade along the way or lose yourself in the facade. of course i can’t tell this to the fans, but dealing with them is kind of bothersome. but even if it is, i also look forward to it, because seeing their happy faces when they encounter us makes it all the worthwhile!”

“interesting. i think most people would pick the latter here, no? it makes sense, i don’t think anyone would want to be hated... which is why i’m probably weird for picking the first. i don’t really care about myself or my image -- it’s not that i care about fame either, but if i’m completely unknown then i can’t reach out to everyone like i want to. i want the whole world to know who i am after all. it might be selfish and it might not make much sense if the world is going to hate me, but if i can discard myself for the sake of others then it’s fine. maybe it’s even easier to laugh at someone you hate because it’s satisfying!”

what moment in your career are you proudest of so far?

“i can’t really say my career has a lot of moments so far in the first place, so there might be other more memorable moments along the way that i don’t know of yet, but so far it definitely has to be getting into the top five in hot topic. was the show rigged from the get go? i don’t know and honestly i don’t care. i deserve this spot too and since no one knows either way, i might as well have made it in by my own effort... i wish more people would see it that way, but we have got quite a bit of criticism before we even debuted. people complaining that their favourite contestants didn’t make it in and using the rumours as an excuse to assume the results would have been different for them otherwise. but they aren’t the results are as they are and nothing is going to change that. it’s bittersweet in a way, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s the moment that defined us as vive, and i am incredibly proud of us for that.”

what have you learned about yourself and/or society since becoming a celebrity?

“for myself i guess i got surprised at how greedy i can be. before i joined hot topic i was ready to give up on idol life and just accept the fact that i was just going to end up with an ordinary day job as a salaryman or something like that. but when i started getting recognition i started wanting more and more. it felt amazing. to watch everyone’s eyes on me and to have everyone cheer for me. i love that. i want to feel that feeling much more from here on out; to have vive achieve incredible things and show everyone who doubted us that we are indeed the nation’s handpicked group and that they were not wrong in choosing me or any of the others.”

what would you like to change about how society views or treats idols?

“this is a bit difficult because a lot of things could be changed if you ask me. but if i have to pick one thing, i think i’d do something about how readily people trust rumous. anyone can post anything online, and suddenly you become a trashy human being for something you may not even have done. if someone says you looked at them the wrong way in primary school, suddenly there’s rumous about you being a school bully, if you treat a girl nicely suddenly you’re dating. that kind of thing. we have no room for mistakes and that’s fair i guess -- we are supposed to be painted as some kind of superhumans who can do no wrong, but sometimes you don’t even make a mistake and then you’re going down.”

“ if i were the ceo, that is a good question -- i don’t think i have the desire to be a ceo, even though i’ve heard i might suit it-- i think if i were to change anything, it would be to be honest with trainee’s that you let go. speaking from personal experience, i think it’s best to be honest with them about why you are letting them go-- then they can work on improving or just do something else. ”

“ to relieve stress in general i used to dance, i still dance when i feel stressed but i have a feeling i might have to change that. seeing as i will be practicing different choreographies for a long while-- i want to take up a creative skill though, maybe i’ll learn to draw? though that doesn’t suit me… oh you know, i work out when i am stressed and tired of practicing, i also like to go for walks. ”

“ the hardest part of being a trainee, i think that would have to be the constant uncertainty -- sure you know if you are doing well or improving but you never know if you are improving the way the company wants. i think that is the hardest thing, not knowing if you suit what they are looking for or if you are just someone there.”

( 20 ) did you enjoy the lifestyle of a trainee or of a debuted idol more?

“ i can confidently say that i enjoy being an idol more, even though it is more difficult -- it feels more secure and safe now that i am here. as i mentioned above, being a trainee is uncertain meanwhile as an idol you have the security of having debuted. then it all comes down to if your group succeeds or not. so far though, i feel i have more freedom as an idol even though i have a strict schedule.”
