I’ve seen some people saying that we should change “Nuts and Dolts” to “Heart and Soul” because Penny has no nuts now but is 100% soul (and Ruby is the heart of the team). Thoughts?

I’ve seen similar posts on this matter, and I think that Nuts and Dolts is still a fine ship name.

Nothing has significantly changed between Ruby and Penny to warrant a new tag for them other than ‘Penny isn’t a robot anymore’, which I felt was never a significant focus of their relationship. If some shippers feel otherwise, and cannot accept ‘Nuts and Dolts’ as a ship name because of her new status, they are more than welcome to claim this name if they wish. Power to you!

Personally, I will stick with N&D for a few reasons:

Firstly, older shipnames have more staying power in the fandom. Any fandom for that matter. Part of it may be nostalgia, but it also because it’s easier to find ship content from longer ago under these older tags. People are used to using N&D as their shipname, and change is scary, so they are less likely to make that switch overnight.

Secondly, RWBY ships have a million names. Nothing is stopping anyone from creating a new and different shipname! Renora is also called Noren, Flower Power, Boop, and Team Sloth. Each of these names have had varying staying power with the FNDM - I know “Team Sloth” has lost it’s significance since the end Volume 1 and it is very uncommonly used. If there comes a point in the future where ‘Nuts and Dolts’ feels wrong because ‘nuts’ and ‘dolts’ no longer describe these two sufficiently, then perhaps ‘Heart and Soul’ will see more use if it resonates with the shippers more.

Lastly, I’ll have to second what @thuskindlyshescatters said about this topic: Shipnames should be unique to the ship and easy enough to find. I love me some Bumbleboop, but knowing that Blake x Nora is called ‘Thundercats’ makes me feel obliged to tag it ‘rwby thundercats’ because otherwise I am tagging a whole ‘nother fandom over one little ship. This is kinda subverted with the Grimm Campaign goofing off with “Feenix Rite” as a pun on “Phoenix Wright” because it’s a reference, but spelled differently so it won’t conflict with the Ace Attorney fandom. This is why we (as a FNDM) tag Blake x Yang as Bumbleby with a ‘y’ and not with a ‘bee’, because tag searching ‘bumblebee’ can give you results of literal bees. If ‘Heart and Soul’ has conflicting search results with other, potentially more popular media, then it might have trouble taking off as a centralized shipname for Ruby and Penny.

TL;DR - RWBY Ships have a million names, so go for it if you find it a better fit for their relationship now! But you can’t enforce it as ‘you must use this name now’ because that isn’t how online cultures work. People will still ship with the older names because they are used to it, and that’s okay!
