Summary:
Jane feels like she doesn’t fit.
Jane feels like she doesn’t fit.
It’s not for lack of trying, on her part or her friends’. She’s so grateful for them, so she won’t bring it up, the awkward pauses, expectant glances, times they catch themselves before they ask her to be what she can’t remember. They tiptoe around her amnesia, but she can feel their anxiety press in on her.
She tries to find her place. Graham’s spare room—“Until you get back on your feet.” Ryan’s offers—“I’ll put in a good word for you, if you want a job at the warehouse. It’s rubbish, but-” Yaz’s faith—“You’ll figure this out, you always did. Do.”
(Even her name feels wrong in her mouth: Jane Smith, Jane Smith, why’s it always feel like something’s missing-)
She has these nightmares, full of ash, people she’s never met that she wakes up mourning before their faces fade away. She dreams of space at her fingertips and a ship that steals her away and other impossible things. She wakes up tangled in an old quilt, shivering like she’s freezing and sweating her sheets damp.
Yaz is the only one who asks her, sometimes, quietly, “Remember anything?”
“No,” Jane lies, smiling, “nothing yet.”
