Design Class Work

Some work I did for my design class! We had to use a character in the Arial typeface and create a Font Sculpture out of it. I chose the question mark and decided to make shapes with it so that I could then make patterns from said shapes. The final image is my completed work.

Final Font Sculpture

To create my Font Sculpture, I started by using the Type tool to create a black question mark in the Arial font and then used the Create Outlines function found in Type > Create Outlines to create an editable shape. Then I created compound shapes by overlaying question marks on top of each other or around each other in different configurations using the Selection tool. After creating my individual shapes, then I used the create pattern function found in Object > Pattern > Make to create several different patterns. Then I created some organic wavy lines using the Paintbrush that I then turned into shapes by using the Shape Builder tool. Then I used six of my patterns to fill my organic shapes, using a different for most of them, and since they are all still in black, I changed the colour of each pattern into one of the six basic rainbow colours, using a few different shades of each colour in each pattern. Lastly I placed a black rectangle that covered my canvas in the background using the Rectangle tool.

The design elements I chose to use were Shape, which is shown in all of the question mark shapes I created and in the abstract wavy shapes I then filled with the patterns. I also used Colour and Value, in the saturated rainbow colours of my patterns and my black background to make my patterns pop and to add contrast and dimension to my composition. I used Space and Balance by leaving half of my canvas black to allow my composition to breath and prevent the patterns from being overwhelming. I used Proportion in the small regular size of my pattern shapes and the larger size of my organic shapes. Lastly I used Harmony and Unity to create a cohesive design.

Decided to see how many shapes I could create out of question marks, then once I had too many, I started making patterns out of the shapes and playing with colour
